Hey guys, I just took my DAT and was wondering if my scores were competitive enough. I did pretty badly in the Biology portion as expected (not my strong point) but did bad on the QR part as well because I was just so tired and got stuck on several problems which killed my time. I scored about 22's on my practice ones but I guess the real thing is just a lot harder.

Perceptual Ability 22
Quantitative Reasoning 17
Reading Comprehension 20
Biology 17
General Chemistry 22
Organic Chemistry 21
Total Science 20
Academic Average 19

I go to school at UT Austin and really want to get into the Houston Dental school but any in Texas would be awesome. I also have about a 3.3 GPA =(
And if you don't think I will get into any school in Texas, which ones out of state do you think I might have a chance for?

Let me know what you guys think.

Your scores aren't bad. I wouldn't worry too much about the QR, and although the bio is low, I wouldn't go for a retake. What is your science GPA? I think your stats are good enough to get interviews at schools, but I would apply to a good number of schools, not just the ones in Texas. I don't know about your chances at the Texas schools though b/c I don't know much about them.

I'd apply to NYU, Boston, Tufts, etc. that take a good amount of out of staters.

Thanks for your reply. My science GPA is also about the same range. The upper division Chemistry courses like Physical Chemistry and Quantum Chemistry killed me, even though they were really interesting. I was just hoping that my high PA would help a little but no idea. And yeah 90 day wait period pretty much rules out a retake if I want to apply early or make it on time.

i would recommend you to apply to out-of-state as well.
i also went to UT Austin and i have 3.4 and 3.2 sgpa with 21/20/21.

last cycle, i got interviews from baylor and sa but no interview from houston. i applied to 4 out-of-state last year but did not hear back from them at all.

with your stats, which is pretty similar to mine but slightly lower, i would definitely recommend you to apply to lot of out-of-state if you really do not want to spend an extra year (which is what happened to me)

this cycle, i am applying to 14 out-of-state and 3 texas schools again.

last time i spoke with the dean of SA, he told me they give UT students some credit for having lower gpa compared to other texas students but we need to have at least 3.3~3.4 sgpa in order for them to feel confident that these students can handle science courses.

Oh man after hearing that has made me really scared. If you don't mind me asking, what is your major and what were your extra curriculars like?

i graduated with Bio BA and worked as licensed Dental Assistant for about 2 and a half years (accumulated about 800+ hrs), fraternity president, and some other ec activities such as organizer for bone marrow drive and medical technician.

yeah getting into dental school is getting harder and harder and I had a personal meeting with deans of SA and Houston and they both told me my other parts of application is good but it's my GPA which hurts me the most (at the time of application last year my gpa was 3.39 overall and 3.09 sgpa). i had 24 on bio, 22 rc, 19 chem, 19 ochem, 21 pat, and 19 qr. 21 aa. 20. ts.

the only reason im telling you to apply a lot of out of state is to make sure that you'll not waste a year. if you apply to more than 15+ your chance will be much higher IMO. my interview at SA told us that thier avg gpa for last class was 3.78..

I go to UTDB and I think your chances are decent. Like Iphie said, GPA is important, but your DAT scores are pretty solid, except bio really.

Just apply as early as you can and sometimes you just have to get lucky. I had a friend with a 2.99 and a 21 get in in the VERY last spot in March (after someone decided to switch schools!), so just apply, interview well, and hope for the best!

Thanks your post gave me some more hope. I keep hearing about people with great stats not able to get in. And yeah I am really weak in BIO. I do like CHEM however and am graduating under a BS in CHEM. I hope this doesn't make schools think I'm too one-sided, like strong in chem but weak in bio.

Its weird as far as people getting in and interviews, Ive also heard of people with not the greatest stats getting accepted! It may not be Texas but there is a diverse group of people getting in every year.

Hi again, any recommendations on schools that have a decent acceptance of out of state students that I could possible get into. I finished my Texas ones and now to move onto out of state applications. The out of state ones are so expensive in terms of applying and cost of attending.
