My 10 year old toy poodle's private part sticks out about an inch every day at least 2 to 3 times per day. Otherwise it is in where it belongs. He is not erect. I brought him to my vet who says he has not seen this before but put him on an antibiotic for 10 days because I noticed 2 blisters on it. The blisters have healed but it is out the same amount of frequency.
My vet explained that when it is out it can dry out which can cause irritation and infection. He showed me how to use vaseline and a q tip to get it back in but my dog likes the taste of vaseline (yuck) which makes him even more interested in the area. The vet has suggested testosterone to boost the tissue around it. I do not want to put him on steroids.
Otherwise he is a frisky, healthy dog but I want to take care of this problem before it develops into a bigger issue.
Does anyone have any suggestions? Thank you so much for your help!
