Some of you know about my recent experience with a statin-induced rhabdo and ARF/ARI... CK of 16,000, creatinine 1.6, etc.

I got my ED bill today... $1100. OUCH!

Thank God for insurance. Now I see why people without insurance can't afford healthcare!

Luckily my creatinine has returned to baseline (whew!)...

The moral of the story boys and girls is do not combine a statin with high-dose niacin. That is all!

My ED Bill story is about my oldest daughter. She was hospitalized last spring for severe dehydration after rota infection blah blah. anyway....we were seen in the ED where I used to work in suburbia, but got transferred to children's hospital a couple of hours later.

We were in the ED for 3 hours! Bill from ED 500 bucks. Bill from hospital that ED is housed in...................5,000.00!!! We were in there precious facility all of 3 hours and then transferred.

The 3 day inpatient stay at Children's was like 1500!

I really really don't get billing at all.

Want to hear my ED bill story? I fainted in my organic chemistry professor's office - ok, no funny comments alright? - and they called the ems guys who took me to the hospital 6 blocks away.

No insurance because I was a poor post-bacc student. After ekg, observation on a guerney for three hours and some nice hand holding by the nurses and a friendly chat with the ED doc I was discharged home.

$1400. This included a $350 ambulance ride for the six city blocks. It took me almost two years to pay the bill but I did. I really do know what the uninsured feel like, having been the uninsured myself.
