Hello everyone, I applied last cycle, and I remember that as I was applying, I wished that there would be a way to find out how people actually did in the cycle. I know that mdapps has this feature, but it's such a pain in the butt to fill everything out. In any case, this was my result, and I hope that this will be helpful in some way!

Stats:
CA resident
3.74cGPA, 3.82sGPA
1st MCAT --> 31, PS:9 VR:11 BS:11 WR😛
2nd MCAT --> 34, PS:11 VR:11 BS:12 WR:Q
~100 hrs clinical experience at the VA
~100 hrs clinical internship
~60 hrs shadowing primary care physician, neurologist, and a pediatric anesthesiologist
~1 year at a clinical research lab where i take measurements from patients, hand-on experience
~2 yrs at a sensory biophysics lab --> no publications tho 🙁
Officer for a student org
involved in various service clubs
biology TA for 3 quarters
worked as a food service worker
sunday school teacher

Schools Applied:
UCSF
UCLA
UCSD
UCD
UCI
USC
OHSU
Creighton
Iowa
MSU
Emory
SUNY Buffalo
NYU
Cornell
NYMC
Einstein
Wake Forest
Vandy
Penn St.
Jefferson
Temple
Dartmouth
BU
Tufts
Tulane
Georgetown

Secondaries: Did all of them except BU (prereq problem) and Vandy (they only send secondaries to those they interview, which is nice I suppose)

Interviews:
Creighton - loved it, it is seriously the school with the nicest people
Wake - biggest surprise: everything was closed on Sunday, and the interview was very non-conversational (basically 15 minutes of them asking me question after question)
SUNY Buffalo - did not enjoy it, the city nor the interviewer (asked me if China will take over the world, um, no? yes, probably?)
Einstein - best lunch of all the interviews
Iowa - great experience, surprised that I liked it so much, small town though
NYMC - ehh
NYU - loved it, great school, awesome location, seemed like the school really cared for their students
OHSU - very average, the interview day was not well planned, had to arrive at 8am just to wait around for about 2 hours, portland is nice though

Waitlists:
Wake, Buffalo (withdrew), Einstein, NYMC (withdrew), NYU

Rejections post-interview: OHSU (wasn't surprised)

Acceptances:
Creighton
Iowa - accepted off the WL right after 5/15, they rank the WL which is really nice

Biggest surprise: No love from any of the CA schools, I know it's super-competitive, but I thought I would get at least one interview, ohh well!

Advice: Just from my own experience, I would recommend people not split the distribution of reach/mid/safety schools into thirds, but increase the amount of mid and safety schools. Of course, I also learned that this whole process is very much a crapshoot, so...apply broadly I suppose.

I hope this has been helpful to everyone, feel free to ask questions/comment! And, of course, good luck to everyone!

Well for confidential reasons I'll list my stats based on MSAR categories. Here it is:

GPA: 3.8-4.0, MCAT: 27-29, PA resident, above average EC's, applied late (unfortunately)

List of MD schools applied to:
Temple
Drexel
Jefferson
TCMC
Penn St
WVU
Marshall
OSU
U Toledo
Northeastern Ohio

Interviews
Temple (Didn't attend)
TCMC
Penn St
WVU

Waitlist
TCMC (withdrew from waitlist)

Acceptances
Penn St (top choice!)
WVU

Advice: There is more to your app than just stats. Make sure your ECs are good and that you are a great interviewer. Not enough applicants do mock interviews which is a shame b/c they really help.

A 3.7 and a 34 aren't enough to get even one interview in Cali?!

:uhno:

Thank you for sharing this! My stats are similar and I'm trying to decide where to apply and if I need to retake the MCAT. I'm not from PA but am interested in some of the same schools you sent your app to. Do you have any other advice?? I need hope!

I'll bite, don't really care about confidentiality at this point.

cGPA: 3.66, sGPA: 3.50, MCAT: 9 PS, 11 VR, 13 BS, 33R

ECs were average to decent

Applied sort of late, AMCAS submitted late August, verified late September, most completions were late September to early October.

Schools Applied: (notice how I'm partial to schools without essay intensive secondaries)

SUNY Buffalo
SUNY Upstate
SUNY Downstate
New York Medical College
University of Rochester
Albert Einstein of Yeshiva University
Drexel University
Tufts University
Albany Medical College
Medical College of Wisconsin
Jefferson Medical College
University of Vermont
Pennsylvania State University
Florida Atlantic University

Interviewed

SUNY Buffalo
New York Medical College

Waitlisted

SUNY Buffalo
New York Medical College

Accepted off Waitlist

SUNY Buffalo

Summary:

I'm from Buffalo and got into my top choice. The whole process is a crapshoot, and I was just extremely lucky.

You will normally get the most love from your state schools. Also find things about yourself that can help set you apart from other applicants. For example, it was brought up in every one of my interviews as to why I chose a non-science major (as opposed to the normal bio major) and the interviewers were always very interested in talking about it. I'm not saying that being a non-science major is unique by any means, but it is something that you can use to your advantage.

Also don't apply to a school just b/c your stats fall within their averages. I made that mistake. Really take the time to look into each school and find what you like about each one. Not only does it sound more sincere on secondaries and during interviews whenever you discuss why you want to go there, but if accepted, you will actually be happy there. Remember, they're looking for applicants who will be a good "fit" for their program. You can have 4.0/40 stats, but if your focus is on research and the school is looking for applicants who are interested in rural primary care, you will most likely not get the acceptance.

Wise words-thank you!!! State-wise my options are pretty limited (Mayo and UMN and Mayo is pretty much out based on my MCAT!) so I need to find some OOS schools that aren't going to screen me out automatically just based on my test score. Otherwise the things that set me apart are sort of pointless...Is there any way to find out which schools screen?

MSAR has all that stuff, it's a good investment...most schools don't screen secondaries, that is a double-edged sword though: on the one hand the school gets to know you better, but on the other hand, schools will gladly take your secondary fee even if you have no chance
