No, not like a weird medical ReNu fungus thing. My contact lenses are up-to-date and pretty comfy.

It's more just a constant tiredness, a slight burn in the ol' eyeballs probably from the premed lifestyle. Too much staring at books, too much time in the research lab staring at computer data (aka SDN) :meanie: and probably not the optimal hours of sleep.

Anyone else get this? Any tips to avoid eye strain given our geeky activities?

Give yourself frequent eye breaks. Look away from what you're doing for 30 seconds, and then return.

Make sure you're doing your reading with adequate lighting.

Get more sleep!

🙂

I am having similar problems recently. My new (idiot) siberian husky puppy scratched my left eye a few weeks ago, and although it has been on the mend, I keep straining my eyes. My problems have been compounded by a combination of computer use, dry eyes, the use of air conditioning, and driving for long periods of time in bright daylight. Oh, and catching a cold - ug.

I've cut down on my computer use (bye bye World of Warcraft) and using those Refresh Plus individual-use eyedrops. I've noticed that usually at the beginning of the day my eyes aren't as stressed, but by the end of the day they are stressed out and hurting to the point of causing acute headaches.

Eye problems suck 🙁

Let me speak with some authority- my dad's an opthalmologist, and I had pretty bad eye strain in college.

Every 15 minutes, give yourself 2 minutes focussing on something at a large distance away. Not your other wall, but out the window. You need to give your muscles a chance to relax (don't ask me the exact names, but the ones that control the shape of your lens, thanks).
It'd be like trying to hold a cup of coffee in the exact same position for the same amount of time without stretching your bicep out and allowing your tricep to work. Get my drift?

Take care of your eyes. And get some sleep.

Hey NapeSpikes, yeah, my eyes always feel tired. But like you, I don't think it's my contacts (altho that Renu thing is creepy, I don't use that brand but my mom is paranoid that I might get something from my brand).

I've been doing nothing but staring at the computer screen for the past several days working on research stuff, so it's worse than usual. Sorry, I'm no help, just wanted to provide some commiseration.

I know you said your contacts are ok, but I had the same kind of problem and it turns out that my contacts weren't permeable enough to oxygen. Just a thought. Changed to Focus Night & Day and it's been like . . . night and day 😛

in homeland kazakhstan we hunt siberian husky pups!

I feel your pain! I get this all the time. If they really start hurting I usually try to take a break or something. Not really ever discovered anything that was a miracle cure, but for a few things that have helped me over the past few years. You could try and turn down the contrast on your computer screen, at least I think it was the contrast, it's a lot easier on your eyes. You could also try reading and studying in glasses instead of contacts.
Other than that just try a break every now and then and sleep.

post in the optometry forum, im an OD student but im sure more people would chip in to help...

1) take frequent breaks if you work at near, and try to set a good working distance (at least 30-40 cm). good lighting also makes a difference
2) if i had you behind a phoropter i could probably check to see if you have any particular accomodative/binocularity conditions that were contributing to your symptoms (phoria, etc.)

if you wear soft contacts and have them in for more than 8 hours a day you begin to not tolerate them as well after a while. When this happens very by person, but if your eyes hurt, switch to your glasses. It will definitely make them feel better. Also use those reconditioning drops throughout the day.

And take breaks like everyone else says.

You might have dry eyes from all of this environmental strain. Check out some information at www.focusondryeye.com ...don't forget to blink when you are reading or working on a computer. 😀

The refocusing on something far away is good for trying to keep your prescription from going up, but for me it turned out I had eye allergies. Apparently under my eyelids, it was inflamed -- my ophthamologist tried to show me in a mirror, but without glasses or contacts, how was I supposed to see?!?
