My father got leukemia last year and I failed step 2 CK twice. Any hope for PMR?

I'm an American who went to a carribbean med school, and when I got news about my dad last year, i guess i didnt take it very well. He later had a stroke, which in no small part promted my interest in PMR. I wanted to go be with him and im afraid it cost me on the boards. I retook them this year and am waiting for my scores. My NBME score was 217 near exam time. Is there any hope for me getting PMR or am I family practice only?

work that story into your personal statement and it'll certainly help. also, you should apply for family medicine and just keep in contact with various PMR programs around the country during your PGY1 year.

I think you will find that if you explain your deficiencies in your personal statement, you will be offered interviews. Although tragic, the stroke in the family will prove you have genuine interest. You should probably apply to a good number of programs through the spectrum of elite to competitive to less competitive programs to increase your chances.
