Hey everyone, this is my first post and I just wanted to introduce myself. I am a sophomore in undergrad. I originally wanted to be pre-vet up until my Junior year of high school as I was a pretty socialphobic person, not a very nice one either, but had an interest in medicine, not saying that vets have the same problems I had.

Since I liked animals, but not people as much, that seemed right for me. But as time went on, my interest in animals faded away, however, I learned how to socialize in communicate with people better. I am now an outgoing person, and I am very comfortable meeting new people. I still had my interest in medicine, so I began to pursue a career as a physiciain, this is my senior year of high school btw. I shadowed a physician for about 4 weeks, and I liked it quite a bit, though, I felt liked I wanted to be more hands on though, which was one reason why I wanted to be a vet, because not only was I like the physician, but I was also the surgeon. I didn't want to go into surgery as the stress would not be very enjoyable for me and I didn't want anyone's life in my hands, so I thought dentistry might be the thing.

This is how it was up until now. I only shadowed a dentist for a day, and this semester, I worked at the dentistry department of a free clinic for only two days this semester. But starting next semester, I will be working at the clinic for 3 days a week for about 10 weeks. I think I'll have quite a bit of experience after few week and I'll know for sure if this is right for me.

So I just wanted to say hi to everyone and I'm happy to join the forum.

Sup. Sounds like dentistry is the thing for you so Im glad you found it. A little advice about this forum... almost any question you have has already been asked so use the search function and read the old threads before you post a new thread. There's a ton of info in those old threads so use it.

young Alex,

Just make note of this introduction you did here. You don't know what you got yourself into. It was the equilalent of your introduction at an AA meeting. Soon, you'll be gong throught the 12 stages of SDN addiction. Sorry, but it is a hard habit to break. I thought I was cured twice of this habit, but obviously I am here typing this to you - instead of studying for final #10 of 11 this semester. Good luck!

True, but if you don't feel like looking up all the answers you will have, here they are, in order of when you get them.

1) Yes, you have a chance of getting in
2) No, there is no official dental school rankings
3) Yes, applying early really does make a huge difference
4) DDS and DMD are the same thing
5) No, you can't wear jeans to an interview
6) X school vs Y school? Go to the cheapest school you got into in a city you can stand to live in for 4(3) years
7) Competitive scores are 3.5+ GPA and 20+ DAT
8) PreDents.com is a place you can compare stats with other applicants and can contribute by making an account yourself
9) Yes, the dude that made PreDents.com is frig'n awesome

That should hold you for a while :meanie:

You just stumbled into an oasis of knowledge, congrats.

Wow, sounds like you have a good start on things, already shadowing in high school, just keep up those grades in college and you'll be fine! Goodluck! And PS, densitry is the best choice!

no, he's a sophomore in undergrad...he was just telling us about his experiences in high school

haha indeed. what did you guys get on the reading comprehension test? 🙂

A little advice to the OP: Take everything with a grain of salt that is said on SDN. We SDNers like to joke around "If you heard it on SDN, then it must be true!" but it usually isn't. I provided you an example quote for reference.

Just saw where he talked about being weird in high school...sorry.

Yeah...well I made a 24 on the RC. Thats in the 98th percentile.

well dentistry is a great field my friend...it might seem a little boring just shadowing and observing a dentist, but once u actually get the hands on experience itll be quite the opposite

Yea.....you don't know how to read. He said he was sophomore undergrad in the second sentence dude. C'mon buddy.

You also didn't need to tell us the percentile - we know 24 is fine. However, you either didn't GET that (not "made") .......or you just don't know how/when to read when it counts.

You should be looking at elementary schools...not dental schools mate.

Who are you to come run your mouth guy? I was offering the kid advice.

Sorry, but I don't think I'll be looking in to elementary schools anytime soon. I'm not the one who hasn't even been accepted yet. I applied to only three schools and got into all of them.

Get your story straight before you take shots at people.
