so i've been working full time since graduation in Dec 2008. I accepted the position at my current job two years ago because during my interview when i explained my future aspirations to dental school they argreed to be flexible with my schedule once I decided to apply. since then, my job has undergone new management. i began preparing for the DAT last summer, all was well at first. the week before my exam my "new" boss discovered I was preparing for a big exam and started giving me a hard time by requiring extra duties and not tollerating any studyiing during down time. that was 6 months ago, unfortunatley my 1st exam did not go as well as planned and I have yet to recieve an interview so I plan on retesting this March. i went to my boss to orgainze time off to study but she is not willing to work with me at all. at this pointI feel i should let go of the job to gain more study time. I intially wanted to test right after the holidays and exhausted the little vaction time I had to prepare but it was not enough time. is this the fork in the road b/t work or gaining acceptance to dental school? i dont really need the job, aside form extra cash for application fees. any advice? i enjoy the job but the pay is low and it is starting to become a nuisance. btw...at night I have 2 science courses which I refuse to drop bc i need the A's., and i know i will make A's in both 🙂 what would you do??

my schedule is as follows:
MW: 8am-5pm work, 5-6:30pm study, 7-930pm class, 10-midnight study
TTH:8am-5pm work, 5:30-7pm class, 7:30-midnight study
Fri: 8am-5pm study, 5-7pm prep course, 7-midnight study
Sat: 8am-5pm work (2nd job, 3 Sat. b/t now-feb), 6pm-midnight study
Sun: study all day

I think you already know the answer. Think forward a year. If you find yourself in the same position as now, not getting any interviews because your DAT was low again, how would you feel? I'm sure you'd say the job wasn't worth it. Focus on studying, raise your scores, fill out the application and then get back to working. 🙂

A low paying job that serves as a nuisance is a terrible thing to look back upon post-non-matriculation... 🙂

Drop it like it's hot.

If you need the money you can't really just drop the job. I don't think it's really that bad of your boss to not allow you to study while you are at work; that sounds logical to me. Just try to make sure you stick to your schedule and study when you say you are and you should be fine. I don't think you really need time off just to study; I know a lot of people (including myself) who studied while taking full loads of classes. Just make a schedule and stick with it.

Maygyver, you're a machine. By the way, Columbia or Penn?

thanks,
your right i've made up my mind. i'm way to close to let up now. all i needed from them was permission to leave a few hours early once a week (on our slowest day) and they will not negotiate time. even w/o pay.
i'm only asking for advice due to my parent initial hesitation to the news. but to them, the idea of not working has always been incomprehensible...
i've always done a juggling act and i'm ready to stop juggling and start moving foward!

Haha, I'm nothing special. Columbia currently. I've got a UCLA interview next month. If I get in there, I might have to go solely because of the weather.😀

Sounds like you know what to do OP. Good luck.

It seems like you would like to have a little cash flow. Is it possible for you to stay on at your job working part time? If not I would try to find a part time job (finding one is probably harder than it sounds) and focus on your studies. You don't want to lose another year of applications fees, time and emotions on not getting in. Good luck

Definitely quit in order to focus on getting into dental school. That is much more important. Maybe you can pick up a part time position in the same company or elsewhere. It sucks that the management changed on you, but hey it happens.

I would say focus on dental school. Maybe get a part time job for some extra money? Its all about the future.

That load is way too much. Some people can handle it but I know that I personally would burn out from one thing or the other if not the DAT... It's really up to you 🙂

I will have to also agree on dropping this job and getting a part time so you can study more efficiently. I actually went bum status for a few months after I graduated to study for the DAT. After I took it and was satisfied with my result, THEN I got a full time job

Of course... I racked up quite a bit of credit card debt over those few months but at least I'm paying them off now 🙄
