It is about to become that magical time of year when the AADSAS cycle kicks off. Feelings of excitement, worry, anticipation, nausea, uncertainty, etc. are already taking over and I would appreciate some real talk about my chances of making it this go-round. To begin, here is my background.

First Application for 2011 cycle
Bachelors of Science: Chemical Engineering, oGPA/sGPA - roughly the same, 2.8
DAT - 19/19/21

I applied to a bunch of schools, surprise surprise no interviews. Currently working on a Masters of Biology: Oral Bio Concentration at NYU with a GPA that is easily going to be 3.7+. I am shooting for 21-23 on my DAT retake, but no official new score yet. Also, I have had a published article in the Scientific World Journal through the NYU dental school.

Not much shadowing, maybe 10 hours, all pediatric. Although, I already have resources to shadow several people once this semester is over.

So with all this in mind, what are some schools that would be worth my time to apply? Im from Mississippi so obviously the only one in my state. Am I now competitive enough to get in somewhere? Also, any suggestions for how else to improve my application are greatly welcomed.

Get in more shadowing hours before you apply. I know it's not the biggest deal as far as the application is concerned, but it limits your school selection and it's just a good idea in general to make sure you know what you're getting into.

As far as schools to apply to go, I'd recommend looking at the spreadsheet at the link below and reading through the ADEA Official Guide to Dental Schools to get a good idea where you may be competitive at.

Shadow a general dentist for at least 30 hours, preferably more. I would suggest NYU, UDM, Case, Marquette, all the newer schools such as LECOM, Nova, Tufts, Temple, etc. the list could go on. The main thing is concentrate on private schools and a few state schools you really like and/or have higher out of state acceptance rates.

Well what will your GPA be when you finish your bio masters? With a 2.8 you have little shot of getting in anywhere. I would say you need to at least get it to a 3.2 or 3.3. And at that point if I were you I would apply to Tufts, NYU, Temple and look for other schools that accept lower GPA's. Your gpa is understandable...chemical engineering is brutal!

That is what I don't know. Will they combine undergrad and grad for an overall GPA or will it be divided up? Im looking at easily a 3.7+ for just the masters program.

AADSAS calculates all scores for the AADSAS gpa. I think your 3.7 might be much less once it is combined with the undergrad scores. Although I did not go to graduate school, so I am unsure of this. You might want to call AADSAS.

You will have an undergrad column, a grad column and then an overall GPA calculation. So a 3.7 will pop out in the grad column even though your overall may still be lower.
