My girlfriend is in her 4th year of pharmacy and will be graduating soon and still doesnt have any jobs lined up. Pharmacy job conditions really suck right now. Anyone else having similar situations?

As for me I work in San Diego area but we're on hiring freeze for pharmacists.

From what I've heard lately, the west coast has far more clinical positions than retail ones. Hopefully she can find something out there...good luck to her!

Yeah, tell her to look harder. There are still plenty of jobs out there. Just wondering, is she interning at a chain or hospital right now?

A pet peeve of mines are people who told me they never interned or worked at a pharmacy before. I understand that school is a priority but like most professional jobs out there, they have to network from the start. Also, most employers dont want to hire a graduate pharmacist or a 6th year intern because it is not worth it. They have to train somebody and paid them above tech wages when the person can barely work because of rotations and studying for licensing exams. Hence maybe, she will have better luck of finding a job once she gets her license.

Still, its not as annoying as people who dont want to work nights or anywhere more than 20 miles from their home. People who complain when they didnt even send employers their resumes yet.

Either way, the situation is definitely bad. Pharmacy career fairs which once have hundreds of recruiters are down to a minimal now. Most of them are not hiring though. I heard the FDA is on a hiring frenzy. Maybe she can look into that?

Well, Riverside areas still got open positions or Central and Northern Cali... you can always get a job in the boonies lol just not in Orange County -.-... Also, I still get 30-40 hours OT every 2 weeks... idk why ppl say there is no opening :x

How far has she branched out looking for a job? I wouldn't expect, and neither should she, to get a job right in your home town just because it's convenient.

i was thinking the same thing. So much emphasis on grades, grades, grades! If you take nothing from school but your grades, you are doing a great disservice

Yeah, it's only 2009...she shouldn't have any problem finding a job except retail positions in choice areas of OC and SD. If she didn't intern/build any relationships during school....well, then that sucks.

she could always work as a technician

All the pharmacists positions are gone. She best look into another career.

Mexico?

Too bad the working conditions in Juarez make south central LA look like 5th avenue

im I the only one that thinks that the title of this thread comes off as a whiny?

Yah, it might have to be outside of california. However, her relatives live in houston and that area isnt in demand either. So we have a couple choices
A) she keeps hanging around here and doesnt work until she finds a job here
B) I sell my house and quit my pharmacist job in san diego to go with her to some random state and apply for a job there
C) I'll have to...*gulp*...support her until she finds something?
D) With this economy were screwed so i should just keep my job (in an area i like) and hope something good happens.

yeah...sucks.

If you already have a pharmacist job, why does she need one right now. Give it a little more time post graduation and see what happens. Use the connections at the pharm school you graduated from, her current school, and your employer to see if something comes up.

and too bad Juarez is across the border from El Paso, TX.

Tijuana is across from San Diego.

the economy will recover eventually. personally, if you already have a job in san diego, i'd just wait it out.. can she find part time, per diem, or temp work?

Are you married? Sell your house and move out of state for your GF? Support her?

Why?
