Sorry for asking so many questions about this.

Is it possible that a person could not into a school just because they did not rank the school high enough?

Thanks again

Do a search, all you questions can be answered. Plus, if you read about the match process on the TMDSAS web site, it explains it ad nauseum.

In a sense...but that is because you ranked a school higher and matched to the higher school. The school below your matched school drop out so...in a way...sorta...this scenario can happen. The schools that you ranked higher above your matched school can still accept you off of their waitlist until June 1st. After that, as I understand it, you are stuck where you matched. The schools you ranked higher on your prefrence list after June 1st have a gentlemans agreement with the other schools that they can not give invites out to the matched students. They then have to go to their waitlist waitlist. Making sense?

I have a question... do any of ya'll know of people with decent stats that didn't match anywhere? I know a couple... just worrying I guess.

I could be misreading you, but are you asking if a school would change their mind and reject you 'cus you didn't put them high enough on the match list? On the day of the match, the answer would have to be "no." They don't wait to see our rankings before the match. They are as blind as we are.

If you get waitlisted, it could be different. I hate to pass on stories, but I do know the student personally. She only applied to 2 schools X&Y, got rejected by Y and waitlisted by X. When she asked Y why they rejected her (didn't put her on the waitlist) she said they told her it was because she ranked school X ahead of them. (I know the XY thing is awkward but I hate to use names) Anyway, this was 2 years ago and she said they mailed out the waitlist AFTER the match had already taken place, so the school knew her ranking, even though they weren't supposed to.

Don't flame me, I'm just passing on the story I got from her!

So what I was referring to is, say "what if"

my wife ranked a school 3rd choice. But the top two schools did not match with her. Is it possible that the school she ranked 3rd choice would have matched "only" if she had ranked it higher? Does that make sense?

TheresaW - No I knew they where not suppost to know a students ranking. Please re my previous post above this one.

thanks

Sorry...I don't get the scenario.

If she matched with #3...then it is possible that her 1&2 could pick her up off of the waitlist if she is waitlisted with 1&2 and the only way to find out if 1&2 waitlisted her is to ask the schools (1&2). The schools she ranked #4 and below, she will NOT have the option to attend. Period. Does THAT make any more sense? I'm finally leaving work, but I'll be back tomorrow. NIGHT!!!

I guess the best way to ask this is...

Is it possible that "if" my wife ranks a school 3rd, and her 1st and 2nd choice schools don't match, the school she ranked third would/could(?) fill the spots with people that ranked the school higher? Therefore, she would not get in the 3rd choice school "ONLY" because she did not rank the school higher.

Heck I don't know if that makes sense? 😀

I am very glad she is the one trying to get in, NOT ME!! This is pretty confusing for me. I don't like asking her to many questions about this. I don't want her to worry any more about it than she already is. So thank all of you for helping me understand this process a little better👍

i imagine it is possible, but she should just rank them in the order she wants. otherwise, shes just going to sit and second guess herself the whole time trying to strategize. i wish her good luck.

That is why I ask on this site instead of asking her. 🙂 I don't want her to second guess her choice because I am asking questions about "what if" this and that. In fact I just want her to go where she wants. I guess on Feb 2nd, after match day, I will ask her how she ranked the schools. 🙂

THANKS AGAIN to everyone

And good luck to all!!!! 👍

i may be completely wrong, but the way i understand the system is that it does not penalize the student for their personal rankings. in fact it seems that the students have the advantage from the way i see it. the computer looks down the list of acceptances from each school in order to see if they have been accepted at a school that they ranked higher. if so, they attend the higher ranked school. if not, they are accepted and their spot is reserved. this continues for each student until ~200 spots are filled. thus you arent really penalized for ranking a school low on your list - the only way you're penalized is if you're low on all the schools' lists. again, i could be wrong, but that's the way someone explained it to me.

I agree with Lane, HI Lane!
The computer is what figures this stuff out up in Austin. On January 15th applicants and the schools must submit their rankings. There isn't anyway that she can be penalized or anyway a particular school would be able to know her ranking of the schools until after the match is completed and she is accepted at that school.
I do know that the schools do get feedback on the percentage of students that rank them their first choice ect. Something like that anyway...I remember Dr. Jones saying something that SA gets 95% match with their list as a students first choice and their first choices. Meaning they don't have to go very far past their initial rankings of the students to fill their 210 students. Maybe they have to go to student #250 to get their last matched student for example...I know that may not make a whole lot of sense. Can anyone help me out here?

So the answer to your question is NO. The schools don't base match day acceptances on the student's ranking. It states the process pretty clearly on the TMDSAS website and your wife should have heard it again at her interviews.

So what you are saying is...that it might only affect you AFTER the match?
