Here is my brief profile:

state university, majored in mechanical engineering
GPA: 3.77

Experiences: little shadowing, some volunteering at Red Cross, a couple of professional project / presentation on medical devices, and one summer of biomedical research

Schools:

Albert Einstein
Albany
Boston
Case Western
Dartmouth
UCLA: David Geffen
Drexel
George Washington
Georgetown
Howard
Jefferson
Mayo
New York Medical College
Penn State Hershey
St. Louis (SLU)
SUNY Upstate
Temple
Ohio State
University of Miami
Tufts
UMDNJ (both Robert Wood Johnson and NJ Med School)
University of Iowa
University of Maryland
University of Minnesota (Minneapolis)
University of Pittsburgh
University of Virginia
University of Wisconsin
Wake Forest

What do you think? Any feedback will be greatly appreciated, 🙂

looks great - mayo and ucla will be stretches tho

good luck!

I was going to apply to a handful of 'dream' schools but I have enough schools in my list already, I thought.

I'm afraid to ask what are your dream schools ... what are these, backups?

UCLA: David Geffen
Mayo
University of Pennsylvania
University of Pittsburgh
University of Washington

Really? You feel that lucky? Or you think your stats are really that good?

Hey you dont have to remind me i dont have stellar numbers.. i know that already, haha

now that you mention it, i see that im applying to a lot of schools that are out of my range.. actually the list above is condensed from my original 30+ schools. I eliminated a lot of schools that need far-fetching

I'd look into these further

University of Alabama
University of Iowa
University of Maryland
University of Pennsylvania
University of Pittsburgh
University of Virginia
University of Washington
University of Wisconsin

Most state schools are not very nice to OOS. Esp when a state only has 1 school. Check out the MSAR and how many students are actually OOS

you are so lucky you are a PA resident....you have so many med schools, and your stats are great especially GPA for engineering. I'm sure you will get interviews at most your state schools at least. Good luck!

thanks for your input

i selected these OOS schools based on the percentage of OOS students they accept, and the schools ive selected are a few of the highest percentage schools

i'll look more into them

thanks again

I'm sorta in the same boat. I've been trying to find those schools who accept a lot of OOS. Maybe we should compare notes. So I found these schools...

Albany Medical College
Drexel University
George Washington University
Georgetown University
Jefferson Medical College
New York Medical College
Rosalind Franklin University
Temple University
Tulane University
University of Illinois
University of Vermont

This is based on 2005/2006 pool

Case Western
Dartmouth
Emory
NY Medical College
\SUNY Syracuse
University of Iowa
University of Kansas
UTex @ Galveston
Yeshiva

Purely based on OOS interview rate percentage..

If you have stas and EC like the OP, this is a very realistic list and I would guess that you will likely to get interview from half of them. You may want to add St Louis, Miami and Einstein.

Purely based on OOS interview rate percentage..

Galveston is auto-capped at 10% due to Texas law, and realize that it could go lower than 10% OOS. And you have to fill out a completely separate application (TMDSAS) and the essay in that application is a bit more specific than the AMCAS one (TMDSAS essay can be used for AMCAS, but not really vice versa).

The University of Pennsylvania is a private school

To the OP, Indiana require that OOS applicants have ties to the state, and because they only send secondaries to individuals they will be interviewing, you would need to somehow demonstrate your ties to the state in your general application

thanks for lots of responses

these are really helpful!

haha sorry what does OP stand for?

I would scratch Indiana...your stats are good, but IU is 90% instate and heavily concerned about numbers with their OOS acceptances. Medical College of Wisconsin shows a lot of love to California students, and I think it's a bit of a hidden gem. Just my two cents, take it with a grain of salt, of course.

jae,

you should definetely cut down your list of schools, no need to spend that much dough.

most penn staters (i'm guessing you're a fellow penn state undergrad) go to either jeff, hershey, drexel, or temple. those are you're best shots and you're very competitive to all four. pitt used to take many penn staters but they got snobby (and rich) so now they don't. penn is almost out of reach but still worth it.

don't apply to uwashington, waste of $$$, same with UCLA and oregon

you don't need UAB, southern schools tend to take southern students, but its worth a shot

the rest of your list looks decent. again you're best bet is those four shools or another big ten schools. good luck!

You should check these numbers, UW has one of the lower OOS acceptance rates in the country (disregarding schools like Arizona).

You are right. Both University of Washington and University of Wisconsin have very low OOS acceptance rates.

But the thing that makes me wanna apply to these two schools is that their average MCAT score of the entering class is not too high. (both 10.4)

My MCAT score isn't that high so this is an important factor for me..

hey, fellow nittany lion! haha

I'm applying to Oregon and UWash because, again, their avg MCAT score isn't too out of my range..

UCLA, for me, is one of those schools that I'm just applying cuz i wanna apply to a few out-of-reach schools

and yea, i might take Alabama out of my list before i submit

This is true, but with state schools, they usually only let in OOS students that are well above their averages.

I'm not sure about Wisconsin, but I believe that U Washington only takes students from Washington and has some seats set aside for bordering states in that area. That one is definitely not worth applying to...

UWash tells you blatantly that without living in WA or a WWAMI state, you shouldn't apply.

I didn't think Oregon was that friendly to out of staters either, but I could be wrong.

thanks for your advices.. i will now take UWash out of my list!

Yea this is a lot of school..

I am a PA resident so that's why I'm applying to UPenn

dont sell yourself short, make some room for your dream schools......cuz u dont want to be left asking what if!!!!!!!!!!!!

my MCAT score is 30, so my section average is 10.0, and here is my question

if the average MCAT score of the accepted students for a particular school is, say, over 11.0, then do i have like 0.2% chance? Let's say I'm around average on all other categories.. do i have a fair chance?

better check alabama again...

bump!

i updated my school list, and i will most likely submit my AMCAS in a few days..

could you provide some feedback on my school list?

Thanks !
