last year (senior year of college) i was considering applying to med school but ultimately decided i'd like to take two years off instead of one. i wasn't sure what city i'd be in, what job i'd be doing, etc... so i asked my profs for LORs last spring (about a year ago) simply because they were right there and it was convenient. they had all submitted them to my pre-med dean by june-ish. now i'm gearing up to apply and suddenly freaking out-- do i need to contact everyone and have them change the dates on their letters? i do have one LOR from late summer of last year and one from my supervisor at work this year. are year-old academic LORs okay? 😕

No problems at all! I just reapplied this year with the same letters from last year and got accepted.

Thanks for asking this. I know that many med schools recommend having writers update their letters--even if it's just the date--to imply that you're maintaining your relationships, but I too am hesitant to request updated letters. Just like you, I'm hoping that my 2 new LORs will assuage fears that I'm an antisocial malcontent.
