Hey guys I applied to MD this year and It looks not-so-good. My mcat is
V-6
P-10
B-13
Q
should i retake if Applying to DO schools, I know the 29 is oK but will that 6 hold me back for DO schools like it did in the MD schools. I am not fishing for complements of the like, I am just debating on a retake. Thanks.

J, tough situation. That 13 in bio is amazing, which makes me think you can improve your PS also...How confident are you that you on the following:

1. Imrpove Verbal
2. Keep PS the same or move up
3. Keep Bio at a minimum 12....

If you do not want to retake, I would call up the schools you intend on applying and asking them for a more definitive answer.

There seems to be too much of a variation in your score. Some schools have a cutoff for each section. I think you need to take it again

I think a DO school will accept you even with a six on the verbal reasoning. As long as you have a high GPA (3.7+) I don't think you should have a problem. If there is a DO school in your state you should be able to be accepted without a problem if all parts of your application are in order. You still did well on the writing section and that should hopefully balance your verbal score. If you really want to go MD you will need to retake but for DO you should make the cut. I hope You're accepted to the school of your choice. Good Luck!!!!:luck::luck::luck:

Retake. No doubt.

Your writing score is OK (if I remember). So you are capable. Maybe just a bad day.

Retake it, hit at least an 8 on the verbal and you will be fine. Good luck. 👍

What's your GPA? You could potentially be in the running for MD schools if you re-take and score atleast a 10 in VR.

A 10 is a long way from a 6.

gpa is 3.67 bcmp 3.75

Apply DO. You should get in. However, I would retake and then apply

Doesn't mean it can't be done, nor does it mean that it shouldn't be aimed for.

The "Q" somewhat shows that the person isn't a total dud for verbal.

J-

I am debating a retake myself, this is so stressful. If you do retake, how are you goin to approach verbal this time around?

well since the mcat i have been reading allot of books and i took great american novels last semester so i feel that i can do much better.

Checked out Exam Krackers verbal at all? I was pretty skeptical that anything would have a significant effect on verbal but I do feel the Exam Krackers was pretty good - I got an 11.

Some of their tips are pretty basic ie. put your pencil down and zone out for 5 seconds in between passages to help you focus, try to imagine who the author is, etc... Sounds corny, but it seemed to help a bit.

just apply, you should be fine. i had a lower VR score then you and a lower overall score. I received like 8 or 9 interviews and was accepted at all of the ones that I went to.

I vote against a retake. I think you can get into a DO school with your 6 in verbal because you have a strong writing score and strong GPA. That six looks like you just had a bad section.

If I were you, I would be hesitant to retake the exam because I'd be afraid I wouldn't duplicate in biology and physical. It's better your verbal is the low 6 than, say, turning the tables and just having a bad biology section. If there is one section where you can slip by with a 6, it's verbal.

Apply to both DO and MD this go around. If you don't get in anywhere, retake.

I do think schools prefer atleast a 7 in a given section. One may still have a shot with a 6, but don't be surprised if the cycle is left something to be undesired.

I was in your boat. I applied this year, late too as in October.
I had 4 interviews with a MCAT score of: 6V, 12P, 11B, W:R
And being an Asiam Am from Cali didn't help either 😀

It was NOT easy and I had so many rejections that every time I count the number of schools I applied to, I lose track of the number.

However, I did get into a US Allopathic school. I posted a thread on the Pre-MD about how I didnt want to go to the school based on location. At one point, I was even contemplating giving it up to go to the carribeans, where the last two clinical years are in NY. (I know it sounds dumb).

I'd say you are in a sticky situation but I don't think you really need to hit a 13 on bio again. I think even if you get a 8 on V, and 11 on your sciences, you should be in good running. And I do agree, lopsided MCAT really does hurt your chances.

I'm still waiting to hear back from one last school though, which is my top choice.

Moral of the story-- It can be done, but it will be an uphill battle. I was so stressed the entire year. I'd rather retake, have a good MCAT, and go to interviews relaxed, knowing that there are no holes in my numbers because I was asked at EVERY SINGLE interview why my verbal score was so low.

Call the schools that you are interested in to see if they have a cutoff for verbal and go from there.

BTW, if I remember right, you are currently waitlisted at a school that rejected me, and I got a 14 on the verbal! I think that the Princeton Review lied when they said that the verbal section was the most important for medical schools. Nice work on the bio section!

Who really knows what these schools want? Although I guess they'd rather have a 9, 9, 9, (27) than an 12, 10, 6 (28). This process is all over the map sometimes. 🙂

A 14 on the verbal is pretty spectacular, though. The VR14 club probably consists of you and a dozen other people, at best. 🙂 Actually, one of my TPR classmates got a 14VR, 13BS, 13, PS. That's right, a 40 overall. It's going to be really interesting to see what happens when he applies with his 40 and 2.9 GPA. Surely, a "wtf?" if there ever was one. 🙂
