I'm now in my third year of surgical residency, and I completed 8 years of higher education prior to that. I feel like somewhat of an academic, spending a good deal of time reading both journals and surgical texts, and teaching the med students, etc...........

BUT, I can say without a doubt that I am truly a closet meathead. I am sacrificing 3 of my vacation days not to present at a conference, or to catch up on studying, but instead to drive to sunny Omaha Nebraska to watch UFC Fight Night: Diaz vs. Neer live. And I am stoked.

My obsession with MMA is nothing new, and I should point out that sherdog.com is one of the few fun sites (besides SDN) that my hospital does not block. But, I had to giggle on the inside when I absorbed the look of pure disappointment in my attending's eyes today when he asked me about my vacation plans.

I know this is off the topic of surgery, but I just wanted to share one of my biggest hobbies with the SDN community. Because, as we know, we only have time for one or two hobbies as surgical residents........

I too like the MMA. unfortunately, I think things have been watered down too much with rules/regulations now that it is a quasi-main stream sport.

I liked the UFC in its real early days when "anything goes"
- not quite the van damme bloodsport "kumite", but close

I also like old school and extreme prowrestling, (and yes I think it's real)

It was worth it....very fun event even though most of the hometown heroes lost miserably.

I have to admit that I felt a little out of place. I haven't had such excellent people watching for a long time, but I got a little scared since I saw 2-3 fights break out in the crowd right next to me.

Surgeons are people too.

Well I'm a huge sports fan - especially baseball. I've gone on road trips during my vacation weeks just to watch baseball games at multiple stadiums!

My penchant for trashy celebrity gossip is no less embarassing a hobby.

Have fun (although I recommend Turkey or Morrocco for your next vacation 😉 ).

You would so love my best friend. I tend to open those magazines in the nail salon and just wonder who they are.

Although I do have a secret love of certain bad tv shows...😍 thank goodness for dvr

impressive. Of course, I am so out of the loop, I saw sandra Oh on the princess diaries and got excited. I'm to old for this...
