Hi Friends:
My part I score is 77 when I took in 2001, as this is very low I am thinking of taking part I again. I have the following questions.

1). I have completed Part II also in 2001. If I am taking part I again Do I have to take part II again?

2). How does retake works?
If my new part I score is less then 77 (or If I fail) do I lose my previous 77 score? OR like GRE I get to use the best score?

3). Is there a way I can give only one paper in Part I? Instead of all?

Any other hints...

Thanks in advance

hi gvc

first of all -there is now a provision for people planning to take part 1 to apply online rather than by mail.

and this is the info on ada.org on retaking part 1 :

"Re-Examination

Re-examination consists of retesting in some but not all examinations in Part I.

To participate in a re-examination in Part I, the candidate must have current partial credit in the Part. A candidate who earns an average score in Part I of 75 or higher but who has one or more scores below 75 is awarded partial credit. Limits on partial credit follow.

A candidate with partial credit in Part I must apply for and take all examinations on which the candidate has failing scores.

A candidate with partial credit is allowed 37 months to pass Part I. If a candidate does not pass Part I within 37 months, the candidate is recorded as a complete failure on the Part.

A candidate with partial credit is allowed two re-examinations to pass Part I. If a candidate does not pass Part I after two re-examinations, the candidate is recorded as a complete failure on Part I.

A candidate who earned partial credit as a dental student or a former dental student must re-establish eligibility for Part I to be eligible for re-examination. A dentist is not required to re-establish eligibility to be eligible for re-examination. "

hope this helps

No, you don't have to take part 2 again. However, since your part 2 scores are in the same piece of paper as part 1 scores, when you show someone your part 2 scores, they'll still be able to see that you scored 77 in part 1. Unless, after you retake part 1, you try to get a new National Board Certificate, if that's possible.

2). How does retake works?

If you have passed all the subjects and want to retake the test, then you'll have to retake ALL the subjects again.

3). Is there a way I can give only one paper in Part I? Instead of all?

Not if in your previous attempt you passed ALL the subjects.

The only way someone can retake only one subject, is if they failed that one and only subject, but passed the rest with 75 or more. That's what called a candidate with partial credit.

hi there,
i really thought tht we could take part 1 partially i mean only few subjects even if one passes all the first time ...u sure tht we can't.
i wanted to give it again too....as ppl r getting such high scores these days.....i got a 79 in part 2 though.......dont know which one to retake.......any suggestions!

i don't think we are allowed to retake part 1 partially if one passes all the subjects. my friend thought of doing that but when she called ada , i think they told her that she can't do that. I am not sure though. you can just call them and confirm. i think its better you retake part 1 instead of part 2 because many schools don't even consider part 2 scores for admissions.

Good luck!!!!

i agree with the all the advices posted by our friends up the thread,77 in the 80's used to be a great score ,but now your aim must be at least 85,because highly competitve candidate will not give you a chance to breath, dont think about taking the subjects of the exam individualy, even if you could, take the exam as a whole, spend few months refviewing the material again, specially i think you got sense of the importan subjects and the material from your previous exam, hopefully you will be fine.

i took nbde two time now first time i got 80% but lost in anatomy
second time i took all the papers and got 78% and passed all the papers...i was wondering if i can take the anatomy only now and use the old score instead of the 78 i got this time....

is there a chance that i can get admission toa dental school anywhere with 78%

i dont know what to tell you my friend,i really feel sorry about that, but why dont you try to check the dental school which have IDP,check their requirements, call them, and see if it does fit your situqations,if not,my advice to you instead of wondering and wasting your time, retake the whole exam, study harder this time, try the dental decks and the asda released paper, you might acheive a good score.

Hi Friends,
I ve been recently introduced to this gr8 forum, which is full of amzingly helping & well informed people.
And I am here for help also,
I took part1 in december 2003 ,without studying, the way i should have(though i regret now),but i was not sure i ll get thru'and thought lets see how it works!
i got79.but i failed in anatomy.now i dont know wat can i do?
i cant take the whole paper again,or i can??this is my question.
and if i take only anatomy,i need to get 96 in anat to get my score around 86.
What do u all recommend?i ll truly appreciate ur help.
THANX.

It is hard to say, go a head an gamble...
in order to get 96 in anatomy , you need to study realy hard for it..

I think you can make it, since you will be studying that subject only. But it up to you if you are welling to take the risk.

Good Luck

Thanx buddy,
but i didnt get u clearly, which risk are u talking about?do u recommend me to take only anat. in july...will 86 be enough,in 2 attempts!!
i truly appreciate u taking out time to help me.

hey tooth girl! i think trying to take only anatomy to score 96 with an overall determination to score only 86, sounds pretty silly to me....this is not to discourage you, but the bottom line is you know that your present score is not really competetive, and you also know that you have to better it out, so why not retake it all over again with some solid preparation? am sure you can do really well.....also am really curious about 2 things?
1. how did yu end up with that magical target of 86?? i mean why not a 90 or even a 96? there are people out here who are diappointed that they are not making it in schools with scores like 87, 88 etc etc....
2. do you really look like ashwarya rai? or ive heard that gals in india are really crazy of her......ps: ive met her in person and she does look really pretty!
anyways all the best to you and retake you exam and you've got to really do well this time!
k'jal

Toothgirl KAJALKIRAN has explained the risk that I was talking about..

It is kinda risky to but all your wish in getting 86 in one subject.

It really would be wise to improve your score in all 4 subject , so you will have like 4 chances instead of one ( doing anatomy only).

But at the end it is your choice

good luck

Hi KajalKiran,
I appreciate ur time and effort to reply& 86 isnot ny magical target, its above 85 and its some realistic target for me,tats wat i ve set it as my minimum &may be maximum score,if i dont take the whole thing again,it cant go beyond 86 without retaking the whole test again.I know there re people with 90 plus,nd desperatly waiting to get in some school & there re people who re in schools with 82-85..,Rest i do ve a year work experience from us ,&i think with 85 plus i shall be fine.
&2nd,I do ve blue eyes, but i dont look like aishwarya, nor am i a huge fan of hers.I just like this picture.
once again THANX.

Hi HIM0098,
Thanx dear,i do am thinking now ,that it ll be a better idea to take the whole four subjects and come up with some better score, yeah there re better chances of getting even above 85 with all four subjects.
once again,THANQ ...

hey toothgal! thats cool....indeed you are maaking a good decision! all the best again! and yeah your blue eyes sounds scary to me---osteogenesis imperfecta?? lol! just kidding!ashwarya rai doesent have blue eyes....her's is a bit greenish though...and guess what? when i had spoken to her she had told me that initially, she used to be concious about it with her peers!!

THANX kajal kiran, yeah i ll be starting biochem from monday, and hence whole thing, one by one.
REST if green eyes didnt scare u,blue shdnt either...
TAKE CARE.
