Today, I found out that the professor who I've been diligently working for since December doesn't know who I am. This is how the conversation went.

Me: *enters office* Hi Professor M, I'm going to be applying for [scholarship] in the near future and I was wondering if you're willing to write me a strong letter of recommendation

Professor M: I only write letters for students who have gotten A's and who've consistently come to my office hours. I don't seem to remember seeing you.

Me: ...But I haven't taken any of your classes. I haven't even taken the prerequisites yet...

Professor M: I'm sorry, where do I know you from? You look familiar.

Me: *incredulous* I've been working in your lab for the past half year!

Professor M: ...Oh! Yes...*tries to remember my name but fails* *awkward silence* When do you need it by?

Wtf?? 😱😕 😱 Unbelievable. I see and talk to this guy almost every day. He frequently calls me by my name and I've even been to his house for dinner.

I reckon he's having mental health problems. I'm terrified to send in the letter that he writes :scared: So sad...What should I do about this? LOL

Use this to your advantage, help him create "new" memories of how great you are.

This is so weird. How many people work in your lab?

It's extremely bizarre. I'm one of two undergrads in the lab. There are about 10 postdocs/grad students as well. It's considered one of the smaller labs in the department.

did you get a haircut?

No haircut or other physical changes since I started working there. I've thought about it and there's no good reason why he shouldn't recognize me 🙁

He doesnt have dementia does he?...or maybe you have a really generic look? How can he conduct research and write scientific papers yet can't even remember one of his employee's name?

He was probably tired and didn't take a good look at you.

I am kind of generic looking haha. But I still find it hard to believe. Maybe he does have dementia...no idea

he probably had his mind made up that he was gonna try very hard not to get pushed into writing a letter and didn't expect someone from his lab

what if it was his twin brother who is also a professor?
