i just created an optomcas account!

i can't help but thinking that every single word i write is going to determine my life. whether its about volunteering or my personal statement, i feel like this is such a big decision. i really want to go to optometry school, but my gpa is not that great, and just entering/looking into my transcripts make my wanna cry (i'm sub 3.0--with retaking, but i have good extra currics i was told) and I'm planning on applying early. and i am tkaing hte OAT end of june, and I needed some emotional support...someone to tell me its all going to be okay -_-

Be careful about making the OptomCAS account too early. I assume you are applying for 2012 admission.... they wipe them clean come July, and make you create a new account. I tried making mine early last year, and had to start ALL OVER in July. You can start working on your essays, and getting everything typed up on a separate word document if you like. Just thought I'd give you a heads up.

Don't be so dramatic. Good job on the extracurriculars, but I am a realist, so I am not going to tell you that "everything is going to be ok." The sub 3.0 is serious cause for concern at this point, even with a good OAT. Good luck in the cycle, but be prepared for whatever the outcome may be.

thanks for being so mean. i hope you feel the same way in your time of need.

Really? Look, I complimented your extracurriculars, which are impressive. I wished you luck in the cycle, and I hope that you get in because you seem to really have a passion for the field. I am not, however, going to lie to you to make you feel better. I want you to do well, but I am not going to promise you that everything is going to be okay when the outcome is uncertain. It is uncertain for everyone that applies. I am also certain I am not the only one who read the original post and thought it was a little dramatic to be posting on a pre-optometry forum. No one has stepped up to tell you everything is going to be okay. I understand that you are worried, but if this is a serious crisis for you, then why are you looking to strangers on the internet to give you solace? If wishing you luck, but pointing out that things may not go as planned really makes me such a horrible person, you really have no idea what a truly mean person is. Also, wishing hurt on someone in their time of need is never okay.

Take a deep breath...it is possible to get into an optometry program with a sub 3.0. Almost every program has people shy of 3.0. They don't advertise this, but they do. You need some really good numbers on your OATs. So concentrate on that right now.

Write a statement that demonstrates your desire to be an optometrist. Write it yourself, and be honest. It's like writing a good cover letter for your resume, what you need to do is get your foot in the door for an interview.

When you interview, and you will (think positive), be honest about why your GPA is lower than you think it should be. I'd rather have someone tell me they partied to much their first year than make up stories and excuses.

Finally, make sure you are very familiar with the profession of optometry. Many candidates "flunk" the interview by not having a clear understanding of the scope of practice and what optometrist actually do. Give some thought to how you want to practice someday, it's a standard question. A good interview can go a long way towards an acceptance.

Stay positive and good luck on your OATs.

IMO, don't worry about your GPA and focus on doing really well on the OAT. Then work on your interview questions and you're in.

Don't give up!! You never know where life will lead you. If it's not meant to be then it's not meant to be. It maybe a whole new adventure waiting for you even though it wasn't the one you wanted in the first place. 🙂
