Hope everyone is doing well. I just had a few questions in regards to my specific status in applying to dental school this coming cycle. If anyone that knows a little more about this can respond, I'd greatly appreciate it. I'm at Rutgers University - New Brunswick and looking to apply to dental schools this coming cycle (prefer UMDNJ). I'm a Sophomore but planning to graduate a year early and currently taking Organic Chemistry 1 during this Spring Semester and Organic Chemistry 2 during the second summer session. I originally took Orgo 1, but withdrew with a W because of personal circumstances and now am having family issues this semester as well so I will most likely receive a C or C+ in Organic Chemistry 1. My DAT is scheduled for July 3rd, but I'm going to submit my application on June 4th, which is the first day and have my score automatically sent. My cumulative gpa and my science gpa will both be a 3.7, including this semester's grades and the C in Orgo assuming I get the worst. I have shadowed a dentist for quite some time now, am doing a summer dental program at UMDNJ this summer, have conducted research for over a year, work at a hospital, have played many different leadership roles, and volunteer as well. I'm wondering how my chances look and will play out. Thank you again!!!

That "W" then a C is going to look really bad. However if your GPA is 3.7 a lot of schools will probably overlook it. If you do really well on that DAT I think your chances are pretty freakin good.

Thanks for the response. I'm going to do my best on the DAT of course, but assuming I get an average score with that 3.7 gpa (cum and science), how will I be as an applicant? I know that W and then a C looks bad on paper, but I just need to get to the interview and I can definitely better explain my situation. I'm not sure which schools will overlook it though and which won't, or if any will grant me an interview?

Just be sure to get a high grade in Organic II, I haven't taken organic II yet but I'd assume it builds onto orgo I, so if you demostrate proficiency in Orgo II they should overlook that C in orgo I.

U could explain that c on orgo in the application section on extraneous circumstances that hindered your academic performance.

Doing crappy in orgo 1 looks really bad cuz its one of the tougher courses & admissions look at how well they did in this specific class.

Do quell any further doubts in yourself as a strong applicant,u need to perform better (B+,a) in orgo 2

But don't worry too much though.UMDNJ gets a chubby from rutgers students & allot of the kids there have allot of rutgers alumni.

With that gateway program, your extra curriculums& that 3.7 paired with a 20dat...I still believe you are in the green zone
