OK sorry for being neurotic but my student host just contacted me and I'm wondering if it means anything. All she asked me was where I went to undergrad, but it's been almost a month since I've had my interview and stayed with her so it just seemed kind of out of the blue. Does the school ask the student host for opinions on the applicant? Or is this more likely just like a random occurrence that I shouldn't worry about?

I don't know specifics about other schools, but at my school hosts don't have any contact with admissions except for being placed on a list serve of available hosts. Theoretically, I could contact them if an interviewee did something mind-blowingly horrible, but I never have, nor do I know anyone who has. Aside from this scenario, admissions wouldn't even know who was staying with who.

The one caveat here is some people who were matched with interviewees for certain optional dinners and whatnot are informed if their applicants were accepted, but their opinions were never asked for prior to this. I think it's more of an "FYI, you may be getting some more questions from this person" type deal.

I wouldn't worry about it. Answer her politely and see if she says anything to indicate that she knows more than she's indicated. Admissions knows where you went to undergrad. Highly unlikely there's a direct tie.

Only premed-fueled neuroticism could convince you that this person is reaching out to you because of some hidden medical school admissions agenda and not because she is bored, trying to be friendly, or is interested in you (aka being a normal person, not some evil med school robot).

Students who might be your classmates when you matriculate are categorically barred from any having input on admissions. This is always the case at every single school. That being said, lol at the rest here

Do you have a common name? I could imagine someone saying to your host, "I just heard that a a girl from my undergrad, Amanda Lee, had an interview here." and your host says, "Amanda...?? I think that I hosted her. I wonder if it is the same girl...."

No biggie.

Uhh then what are student interviews?
They are always, literally always, MS4s who will graduate before you matriculate. They will not be your classmates.

I had interviews with 2nd, 3rd and 4th years. I find it so hilarious when people like you spew this bull out of their ass and literally have no idea what they're talking about.

My student interviewer was a second year medical student. I don't think you know what you're talking about.

Ok I'm sorry I am just saying what I've heard from a lot of students on the interview trail. Heard/confirmed this from at least 3 schools this year but it looks like every place does stuff differently. No need for the rudeness

This is why people hate on SDN because misinformed Freshmen think they know everything about the app process
I think another reason people hate on SDN is because of the overt aggressiveness and sheer toxicity of some comments? Like the replies here in the past 5 minutes. I am a non-trad parroting what I've heard from people. Not a "Freshmen"

When you make stuff up I think that's grounds for people to be upset.

"always, literally always" is pretty strong for somebody who literally just said they're parroting what they heard from others. Until you've spoken to every single admissions office you cannot make that claim

I recommend not parroting

Lol no it's because people give false information and insist it's truth until proven wrong instead of admitting ignorance or doing some proper research. I also was interviewed by 2nd-4th year students and know for a fact that at least one school I interviewed at allows first year input as well. I have no idea why you would speak in absolutes and insist it's a universal rule when you're relying on secondhand information from a limited number of people lol.

I had a MS2 as a student interviewer as well.

At one particular school in the midwest, the MS 2 and Ms 4's interview candidates AND have input into the final decision. In addition, they also help screen initial applications.

@ OP - I think your host was just being friendly.

Hosts at my former school were almost always first year students. I hosted a girl relatively late in the admissions year. She emailed me back after her interview to let me know she got waitlisted. Both me and my roommate enjoyed spending time with her, so, come June, I emailed her again to see what the result of her applications across the board were. She had an acceptance somewhere else, but was still really interested in coming to our school. So, I emailed the Dean of Admissions and said that we thought she was great and would love to see her come to our school.

The next day, she was accepted off the waitlist.

To say that students have no impact on the admissions process is not true, as several people have indicated. Now, I'm sure other premeds who are applying don't have any say in the admissions process for anyone else, so maybe that's what you meant.

....wow... Can't believe some of you are acting like Cuetec committed the biggest crime ever by posting a small misinformation. Seriously, there is no need to jump down his/her throat over this. This is just stupid.

As for OP, this is so not a big deal for your host to ask you this. Don't over think it. Just chill.

I've seen n00b_pwner's posts in other threads and he/she is consistently mean

^This completely. My school as well as a few of my friends are very open to current student input about perspective students both good or bad. It makes sense, schools are trying to decide between thousands of applicants that they only get to see during interview day when essentially everyone is on their best behavior.
