I bought Kaplan MedEssentials right before first year started. I used it alongside my courses the first 2 years. The summer between first year and second year, I annotated the sections of immuno, microbio, hematology, and biochemistry from the kaplan lecture series books into my kaplan medessentials book primarily to review ms 1 and prepare for ms2. During second year, I used kaplan medessentials extensively with my courses as well as doing kaplan qbank questions.
When school was over, and we got 6 weeks to study for step 1, i opened up first aid and kaplan medessentials side by side. I would start my day at 830, and spend an hr and half, looking at a section of kaplan medessentials only for the sole purpose of understanding and basically seeing how and where the information was presented and laid out. It wasnt too difficult since I had been exposed to the book extensively during ms 1, the summer, and ms2.
Then after the 1 1/2 hrs, I would open up first aid, and then whatever was in first aid I would find in kaplan medessentials. If I found it in kaplan medessentials I would highlight it. If it werent in kaplan medessentials, I would write the stuff from first aid in green ink into the kaplan medessentials book and write the corresponding fa pg# as well.
once that was done, took usually about 3 hrs, i would then go for lunch break for an hour. It would be 2 then by that time. then I would spend trying to memorize that section of kaplan medessentials trying to absorb as much for 4 hoursas I can BUT particularly focusing on the highlighted and things I wrote with my green pen and make sure I know those things cold. But it wouldnt be too bad, since I had all ready been exposed to kaplan me and actively writing down first aid stuff actually made memorizing easier.
By this time its 6. then i would do uworld questions for 2 hours, just reading up on the stuff i missed (not spending time on what i got right), and kaplan qbank for an hour.
I got a 252 with this method, and wanted to share it with you all for those planning out how to study for this exam.
