Here ya go - it's been done before.

it's possible that he's on BMEzine, because he's done all kinds of freaky stuff, but I know him online at another forum
I wonder what hurt more, the tat or the stud at the top of his back. ouch.

As I understand it, the two-snakes caduceus is the staff of Hermes. Asclepius, the bearer of the one-snake staff, was the patron god of Medicine. One-snake is more "officially" accurate to Greek tradition but two looks cooler.

And besides, there're plenty of people out there with binary, chemical structures, hexidecimal, bar codes, video game characters, formulae, etc. . . I highly doubt a DNA molecule is the nerdiest one evAr. Lolzorz.

Then again, my boyfriend & I have just decided that our wedding bands are gonna be mobius strips. 🙄

You are correct, we love to adopt things from them Greeks 🙂

I got a tattoo on my lower back, and I didn't think the pain was that bad. Granted I was also on some serious cold medicine at the time, so if you are worried about pain you could always sedate yourself with a little benadryl before hand. 🙂
I had always imagined that the most painful tattoos would be those directly on top of bones, but the most painful part of mine was not directly over the spine but instead out on the sides where women tend to have more fat stores. It probably just depends on your tolerance for pain. A tattoo hurts, but it can't hurt that bad if so many people get them done, right?

what is your tattoo of? I have one on my lower back too (a pretty big one across)... just curious what you put there 🙂 i actually am thinking about getting another one but dont know where would be a good place. i dont want it to be anywhere a patient would be able to see so that rules out most areas.... 🙂

Neither. It was probably more painful when he split his tongue with an X-acto or when he did a suspension (that's when they put the hooks through your back and hang you in the air).

meeeee too! holy cow.

i thought about getting a caduceus last year for my 21st birthday. it seemed creative at the time, but listening to you guys, it sounds like we could have all shown up for med school with the same tattoo! 😀

Let's do, and then we could start a club! 😛

No, I would say the most painful spot would be over the mastoid process (that lump of bone behind your ear for those who dumped everything they learned in anatomy). And for the record, the pain with tattoos over bony prominences has less to do with nerves and more to with the lack of cushioning resulting in the bone getting hit.....trust me, not a pleasant sensation......

BTW I'm saving up to get a tattoo on my back of an angel cradling a child and holding a sword and the words "That others might live". I'll scan the picture (a drawing I did) and post it here if anyone is interested.

I have an angel on my lower back. It's not a frilly one - actually it's a hooded angel (a good one!) done in black/white with lots of shading. I just got another one when I was down in Florida in December of a dove with an olive branch close to my angel. My tattoos are very special to me, and it took several years to find the right angel and dove.

To the OP - my lower back didn't hurt really at all for either of them - the dove's wing is right at the area where my lower back meets my middle back - that part stung.

Also - you can expect your tattoo to cost anywhere from $100-300 depending on the size and shading, something you might want to be aware of.

And for the rest of you thinking about tattoos, remember:

It's a permanent reminder of a temporary feeling.

Megboo speaks the truth here....especially about cost. Be prepared to shell out at least $50 (buddy got a friends name....just a name, shaded black, pretty much a plain jane tattoo but cost him $50). The more intricate you get, with colors and so forth, the pricier it gets. They will give you a quote once you are seriously interested.

And yes, its a permanent reminder of a temporary feeling.....both good and bad.

Hey, thanks, I"m hoping it'll look good. I've been thinking about it for a long time. it'll be nice and small, black, shaded, nothing too loud or garish. For a while I WAS thinking about doing it in neon green and maybe having a flaming clown skull beneath it, but i opted for the simler route 🙂
Anyways, I just noticed that you got to AECOM, so tell them to accept me (they're my first choice) and I will be able to show you the tattoo!

How do you like it there, btw? When I went on my interview my heart just went thump! I loved the place, especially the general atmosphere between the students. I"m getting SO nervous, they send out the letters around my birthday. yipe

Yeah, I just saw the picture of the guy with the double helix up his whole back - it wouldn't suprise me if he paid well over $500 for that. My husband likes tattoos and has several (Sailor Jerry stuff). He got one on his calf that was $350 (colored).

Anyway, I also meant to ask the OP - have you gotten into medical school? If that's the reason you are getting the tattoo, then I would make sure of that. If not, buzz away!

All this talk of tattoos made me go out and get another one this weekend. I will post a photo as soon as it heals!
