Hi:

Is it true that in some rural areas of the states FP's perform C-sections? I know they are qualified to do vaginal deliveries but are they really allowed to perform OR procedures such as C/S's ?

Thanks

🙄

It stills happens, albeit rarely.... but your malpractice carrier will hate it, and make you pay dearly for it. And you never get enough experience to get very skilled at it. I think you'll change your mind anyway...Ob is taxing. 😴

This still happens alot more than you'd think in the rural world. There are some family practice residencies out there where you do 40-50 c-sections during your residency for this very purpose. I have also looked at a few jobs out in the west where they are looking for a family practice doctor with a requirment that he does c-sections.
Many family practice residencies also have a one year fellowship in OB to prepare FP docs for c-sections and other advanced OB procedures.
In the urban area this doesn't happen but as many previous posters have said the rural world plays by different rules, b/c they have to.

My last rotation was with a FP physician in rural Oklahoma. He does his own C-sections. Not something I am interested in doing as a FP doctor (due to liability issues), but nice to know that I can get the training to do them if I want to.

BTW - this doctor netted $278,000 the previous year. His billing staff was unbelievable.

check out the fp residency at ventura county in california. they credential their residents to do appys.......

The FM residency in Greeley, CO, will train you in appys, sections, hysterectomies, lap choles, and a bunch of other procedures. It's another strong program to check out. They train their grads to practice in rural, underserved areas.
