I have an interview at Columbia and then an interview at Georgetown two days later. I want to take the Amtrak train from New York City to Washington D.C. What is the name of the train station in New York City where I would catch the Amtrak train? Is it Penn Station or Grand Central Station? I am a boy from the Northwest who has never been to the Big Apple so thanks for the information. Oh, is it easy to figure out the subway system in NYC and what do I need to know to avoid being mugged? Are there any areas of town that I should avoid? Are there any tourist things that I should do while I am in NYC? I am arriving two days early so I can be a tourist.

Penn Station.

To get to Penn Station from Columbia, take the A downtown from 168th St. to 34th-Penn Station.

To avoid being mugged, don't look like a tourist.

The name of the station is Penn Station, and though I have not done it myself, it is probably a good bet that that is where the Amtrak stops. However, I think you should just go to the amtrak website; I just got finished with planning a trip with them, and the website was reasonably helpful.

As for the rest, if you are a museum junkie, you can totally go nuts (the met is amazing, there's the guggenheim, etc). Same way with the resturants. As for the public transportation, if you have a map, it can be figured out. It's a little complicated, but not impossible. That's about all the NYC advice I can give you. Good luck on your interview!

No... no touristy things to do in New York  Whatever you do, do not go to Times Square (subway gets off at Port Authority), the Met (upper east side), the Empire State Building (see: Sleepless in Seattle), Statue of Liberty, or the World Trade Center site. Stay in your hotel room and order room service... food in NY sucks! :luck: Have fun...

Amtrak to DC from NYC leaves from Penn Station. Penn Station is on the 1 train (subway stop is 34th St/Penn St)...and so is Columbia (stop is 168th St). It's really easy to get around, and don't be afraid to ask people questions if you are confused or lost. You will not get mugged, even if you look like a tourist.

Amtrak in DC comes into Union Station which is downtown DC, not close to Georgetown. The metro (DC's subway) is in the basement of Union Station, but there's no metro stop in Georgetown so a cab might be easier.

what do I need to know to avoid being mugged?

As a native NYer, having a permanent scowl while walking does wonders. Your eyes should scream "F*** off!" :meanie:

FYI - Don't dawdle on the sidewalks and walk fast, people have places to go and will not hesitate to knock you over en route. 😎

If you can go downtown to the village, there are fantastic hole-in-the-wall restaurants, from every region in the world. I wish I could go there for lunch!

Enjoy New York!

:luck: Hope it works out for you!

<--- Forever waiting for an invite 🙁

The A gets you there much faster.

Plus, I think Amtrak is on the 8th Ave side of Penn Station (don't quote me on that).

I agree. I LOVE the village. Lots of laid back, cheap eats. I have a NYC interview on Monday. I'm leaving this Friday to get a couple days in the best city ever . . .reading in central park, good drinks, big salads, great zhenzhu naicha in Chinatown, and the best shopping in the world! :insert squeal here: 😀

Here's a tip: don't say the Big apple in NY. No one calls it that. 🙂
Penn station it is. You can take the A,C,E,1,2,3 and even the B,D,V,F there. The latter 4 trains just takes an extra avenue block or two.

Tourist things to do: you can always experience Chinatown. If you look like a tourist, those people on the streets who are selling bags and watchings will hound you. If you want one, don't be afraid to haggle them down. My friend once got an 80 dollar bag down to 20 bucks. The area around Union Square (14th and lex) and St. Marks (8th and 3rd ave) have some decently priced restaurants and bars. Major shopping areas: South Street sea port (take the train down to Fulton), Manhatten mall (BDVF to 34th), swanky Fifth Avenue, and Time square. If you want to enter the statue of liberty you have to reserve a spot two days in advance. hmm... that's about it. Stay below 60th st unless you want to go to upper central park or your hotel is there. It's not dangerous, it's just mostly residential areas. There are a few museums if that floats your boat.

Good Luck on the interview.

Hmmmm fun things to do in NYC? NYC itself is awesome. You can go to little italy, china town, little india, brooklyn, queens, bronx. There are things to do in every borough. Although I've never really been to Staten Island. I went there once...and I'm a new yorker. Its easy to get around NYC if you've got the right tools. I.E. A NYC Subway or bus map, hopstop.com just put in the place you're at and where you want to go. And one of the posters said don't hesistate to ask someone. So don't because contrary to popular belief new yorkers are nice. Except me....I take pleasure in giving wrong directions. Mwahahahahahaha. lol
