NYMC is a stand-alone PhD, MD school. The exams are double--an in-house exam and a miniboard, the latter having three or so days allotted after the first exam. Material is overwhelming and way over what the standard curriculum in the country. Exams are geared to differentiating the top handful of students, out of a large class size. The result is voluminous material, not practice readiness.
This means that the bottom third of the class is psychologically traumatized (a previous PA on staff for the school divulged as much, many students on prescription amphetamines, anti-depressants, anti-anxiety meds), on the verge of failing every semester (or trimester for the really sadistic schools--this being a placeholder for nerd MD-PhDs to haughty to keep the curriculum normal--NYMC, even with a trimester system, did not have enough time in the year to teach embryology or radiographs, both being the responsibility of the student--though the subjects were on the test. In years past NYMC would use different stock letter head to differentiate between different cohorts of students, in contravention of the spirit of academic standards.
If you ever see a school use miniboards for tests, ask if it is in lieu of in-house exams. If it is not, it's going to be another sink or swim sadist regime, a la NYMC, where the boards are cake walks because of the double abuse and dual test regime--the MD-PhDs sure are not harmonizing the material between their own vanity courses and board material.
