I just adopted a new dog and need a name. I'm not creative enough to come up with one on my own and I'm iffy of the suggestions I have received thus far. He is the most awesome 3-4 year old spotted cocker spaniel. He fell asleep while I was combing him out. I have to take him to the groomers, but I'm gonna wait until he has healed from being neutered. He just sat patiently in the passenger seat on our long ride home today (I haven't gotten a pet-taxi yet).

My mom suggestion is "Booney". I don't really like it that much. I was thinking "freckles", but it is too girly. "Buddy" is too cliche`. I was leaning towards "Mercer", after my alma mater that I love so much. Any suggestions?

I'm trying to upload a pic, but it won't let me!!!

<-----That' him!

How about Bob? I always want to name one that- no one will let me.

Or Elessar?
Nah, prolly too geeky.

Shep? 😍

Whatever you do, don't name him Sullivan. That dog name is cursed with eating expensive things, and surfing counters. Bad name. Bad bad name.

Austin. He looks like an Austin to me. That being said though, I'm not very creative with names...My 7 fish are named Monday - Sunday...I got a bit more creative with my furry and feathery babies though...😛

Let us know what you decide! 😀

Oooh- he's the same color as those hazelnut choco seashell things. They have a name- I don't remember what it is, but maybe that would be a good name for him.

Just not a good snack.

I have no clue what this is??😕 If you think of it, let me know.

pawprints: I had a Toggenburg nanny named "Toggenburg". A one-horned nanny named... you guessed it, "One-Horn". Many more obvious names! My sister has a dog that is the color of a red fox and his name is Smokey.😕 That was his name when we got him.

Keep them coming!

The intarwebs tell me the name is Guylian But I don't know how manly a name that is. Alternately, the speckles make him look like rocky road or hokey pokey ice cream.

Damn, I must be hungry.

lol...clearly originality is not a stron point for us...😉 Ah well, I don't think my fish, nor your goats mind...😛

And maybe lazyjane is referring to the 'Guylian' chocolates??? :S I'm not 100%, but those are the only seashell ones I know...That's a pretty wicked name though...🙂

How'd I get actual seashell out of that?

I've always thought scientists make good dog names. Avogadro. Newton. Planck. Tesla!

Hm...there were several baby goats a few summers ago at a public farm I volunteered at that were named after important literary people--Poe, Wadsworth, Hemmingway, etc. I thought it was a pretty cool idea; I might just have to use it in the future myself! 🙂

I like Mercer.

My Cocker is Cousteau. A friend has one that looks similar to yours and his name is Sammie.

I tend to give weird names like Journey, Melbourne, Darwin, Leopald, Minke, Mako, Solstice.

We have a client who teaches high school chemistry that named his dog PVNRT.

Pronounced Pivnert, but I think we all know what the PV=NRT equation is in reference to. 🙂

Personally, I think he looks like a Marley. He's adorable! 🙂

Now that you mention that, we have a music teacher for a client who has pets named Melody and Harmony

We also have a couple who are both pilots, and thier pets are all aero related like Turbine, Boeing, Aileron, and Rudder. I think they have 3 more pets, but I can't remember the names.

We also have a physics prof with cats named Position, Velocity, Acceleration, and Jerk.

I originally wanted to name my pets after cities I had visited, but first husband nixed that.

I think he looks like Benny or Murphy, I'm not too original though. Donald would be funny!

I've always wanted to name a dog "Askit". That way when people ask "Ohhh.... what's it's name?" I can say "Askit" 😀

I know it's corny, but it'd be fun. Either that or something like sloth, kangaroo, alligator, etc... those sound like good names.

Are you Irish? Has red freckles....

....Patrick!🙂

That's hilarious! I would have to cross it out, though. With my strong southern accent it would sound like, "Ass-Kick" and I don't cuss. I teach Physical science and can never make it through the "white light" section because it sounds like, "whyt lyte".🙄

MUGSY.

There was a client at the old clinic who had a pet "Purkinjie" ewww what a horrible name. I'd rather name my pet Ventricle- or AV Node for that matter... over "Purkinjie" yuck.

Knew a clinical pathologist that had cats named after cuts of meat - T-bone, Brisket, Pork Chop, Rump Roast. Not that I'm suggesting that... lol. It was funny though.

I'm also fond of less-common human names for dogs... Elmer, Amos, Eugene, Herman, etc.

Thrust, V1 and Citation???? 😀

"Holden" = I just loved The Catcher in the Rye.

I also like: Reese, Bodhi, Capone, Muttley, Taboo, Oliver, and Ozzie.

Rugby, Bubbles, Onion? Names of real animals I thought were cute/funny.

Drambuie, like the liquor. 'Buie' for short. It's the color of his freckles.

I wouldn't want to name my dog after Holden Caulfield... lol. Maybe that's just me.

Literature characters are great places to pull names from. Have a favorite book? Name the dog after a favorite character.

I wonder how many poor dogs would be named "Edward" if teenage girls went that route. Actually, Carlisle could be a cute dog name.

I also like Drambuie, though it's a bit of a mouthful. 🙂

Like twelvetigers said, do you have any tv shows, movies, books, or videogames that you like? Sometimes I pull names from things I'm interested, but ONLY if it fits the look or personality of my pet. For example, I named my betta fish Axel after a character from the videogame Kingdom Hearts, because he's red/white and is sweet but spunky. So fitting. Let's see, my female hamster is named Tonks (from Harry Potter, a'course!), and I used to have two guppies named Elphaba and Fiyero (after the characters from the musical/book Wicked!).

FOR EXAMPLE, if you like to watch the tv show Lost, how about naming your dog Sawyer? lol

We have a client with a boxer = Goose, an english bulldog = Duck, and a fish = Whale.

Oddly enough, their names all fit.

Barnaby. 😀

Looks like a Barnaby to me!

Or Silas.

BUT I really like Mercer. Mercer is a pretty good name.

If all else fails, go with "Emanon"

One of my client's named a dog this...it's "No Name" backwards. It works lol

LOL! How about Sully? I was thinking, well your southern...SoCo and Lime, yummy shot btw, and Sully evolved from that, I know strange, but I like Sully....Or how bout Mel, for his caramel like coloring. 😀

LOL! How about Sully?

I like Sully! I vote for Sully.

You could name him Sullivan, and then just call him Sully. How about Winchester? Then just call him Chester.

Oops I just saw this... 😛 haha.

I think Cockers look like dignified Brits, so I like a dignified Brit name like Wallace or Winston.

Good looking dog though...Congrats!

Yay for candy names! My cat's name is Toblerone and I'm pretty sure we're going to stick with the theme for future pets!

I always think this too. Whatever you name him make sure he has a feudal title like Sir/Count/Lord Bingo. How about Baron or Duke?

You could be really original and call it .. Bo. Viscount Bo.

You could look up the date that you got him and see what celebrities or famous people were born on that day... and maybe get an idea.

I like naming either for looks, or for personality...

I named my recently-adopted dog after a character in a movie 🙂 The personality fit.

Oops I just saw this... 😛 haha.

Sullivan the rescue golden ate the lawyer's custom italian shoes. and the lawyer's wife's grandmother's wooden spoon. And tried to unstuff the lawyers couch. Then they gave him back to the rescue- who gave him to my mother, where he was more than once found on top of the counters, trying to get to the garbage can strategically placed on top of the fridge to keep him out of it. This was not a 2 year old, either.

So use that name at your own risk.

I've always liked names that rhyme with the breed names... like Rocker or Daniel. That way you can call him "Rocker the Cocker" or "Daniel the Spaniel" 😀

He looks like a Leopold. Not sure why, but he does. It's kinda regal. And he looks like royalty 😀

Wow! Thanks everybody. Y'all have actually made this harder, because there are so many awesome names to choose from.

This has got to be the most awesomest (bad grammar!) dog ever. He is already potty trained, he sits on command and when putting on/taking off his leash, he slept all night next to my bed in his dog bed and I've yet to hear him bark (I'm sure he does, but hasn't made the faintest sound yet.) He loves to play and run, but since he was just neutered yesterday, I have to keep his activity low. He has yet to bother my bird, even though she growls at him! I luv my dog!😍 I'm gonna take the weekend to finalize his name and I'll let y'all know. Thank y'all!!!!
