I saw this in Kaplan but I dont think any of the chioces are correct

4,6-dimethyl-5-isopropylnonane
4,6-dimethyl-5-isobutylpropyloctne
3,5-dimethyl-4-isopropyloctane
3,5-dimethyl-4-methylpropylnonane

The best choice here is c b/c everything is named correctly HOWEVER: IN NAMING ISO COUNTS AND GETS ALPHABETIZED BEFORE METHYL (di doesnt count)

So shouldn't it be 5-isopropyl-3,5-Dimethyloctane

3,5-dimethyl-4-isopropyloctane

Yeah, I also think isopropyl should be in front of dimethyl?

CAN KAPLAN NAME ANY ORGANIC COMPUND?? I found like 5 mistakes in the last hour. Heres another:

What is the major product when 2-methyl-1-propene is reacted with HBr and H202?
A. 2-Methyl-2-bromopropane
B. 2-methyl-1-bromopropane
C. 2-methyl-2-hydroxypropane
D. 2-methyl-1-hydoxy-1-hydroxypropane

So B is the best chioce but COME ON KAPLAN.... 1-Bromo-2-Methylpropane

Its not even tricky with prefixes just simple knowing how to alphabetize!!

Imagine there was a rule saying, "Find more than 5 mistakes, and you can get your money back". Kaplan would go bankrupt. HeHE:laugh:

Too bad that isn't true 🙂 I'd love to have that stack of cash back 😎

Propyl of the iso-propyl is alphabetized- not iso.

Are you sure man. I'm looking in Kaplan's purple book right now, and in Chapter 1 of O-chem, page 233 it states, "prefixed such as di-tri-etc, as well as hyphenated prefixes (tert, sec, n) are ignored in alphabatizing. In contrast, cyclo, iso, and neo are considered part of the group name and are included in alphabatizing"

Hmm...so it looks like there was a mistake in the question.

Im not using kaplan for orgo so I don't know what they say, but in my orgo class we always alphabetized the Propyl in iso-propyl.

when naming isopropyl it falls under "I" not under "P". The iso is taken into account. Whats new Kaplans made another mistake. LOL not the first and certainly not the last.

LOOK AT ITEM 6C IT CLEARLY SAYS THERE THAT ISO IS COUNTED.

On the Kaplans Test in the back of the blue book one question is
Which is true about cardiac muscle and the answer they gave was that it is voluntary muscle. I am pretty sure that that is also incorrect.

Iso gets special treatment.

Iso gets special treatment.

What do you mean by saying, "Iso gets special treatment"? are you admitting that you made a mistake? Iso DOES get alphabatized!! It is only the di,tri,tetra,.... prefixes that are not considerred in alphabatizing.

It would not be the first and certainly not last.
