Any advice on howto name a practice? I remember reading in a journal that it's bad to name a practice after yourself because it can cause problems with future potential partners or when trying to sell it. How did you all come up with the names of your practices?

Just follow the name formula:

Step 1: pick city, state, region, or state nickname (eg. Lone Star)

Step 2: pick "pain" or "spine".

Step 3: pick "consultants", "specialists", "associates", or "institute".

Voilà! There's your name. If your area is saturated, every possible combination may already be taken.

Choose "Spine Institute/Clinic" or something along that line. My practice was already set up as a "Pain Clinic" and people don't understand why I don't treat all types of pain or give narcotic pain medication for all types of pain.

"Sport" and "Spine" brings in better-insured patients than "Pain."

If you use your city as part of your name, and it is not a gigantic city Like NY, LA Chicago, you may turn off people outside the city. Regions may be better - "Sport and Spine Institute of North Central Arkansas." I would only use the whole state ("S&S Inst of Arkansas") if you are big enough to lay claim to the whole state.

Also think about the longer your name, the harder it will be for people to enter it on the web - Sportandspineinstituteofnorthcentralarkansas dot com may get hard for people to enter correctly.

"Drugs and Hugs"

555-Pain
hours Friday through Saturday 4pm to midnight
Walk ins welcome
cash only
(please leave firearms at door)

this is a cant miss

I think if you are solo then you can only be a "center". If you have 2 or more docs you can be an "institute".

Why not try the Chinese naming method - Lucky Seven Pain Clinic and Convenience Store.

Crazy bob and wacky tims pain emporium. Half off on cervical RF if you buy one lumbar RF now. Don't miss this opportunity to be pain free! That's right, I said pain free!

1) avoid the word "pain" - it will mess you up.

2) avoid the word "institute" unless you have >6 nationally known doctors on staff...

3) the words Advanced or Laser will help w/ patient advertising, but will make you look like an idiot to your peers.

So if the DB literally down the street from me, who named his practice "Advanced Pain Interventions" just changes it to "Advanced Pain Intervention Institute" he will become King of the DBs?

Great advice! Huge help.

Does the word advanced really make you look bad amongst your peers?

Name yours "The Dollar Doctor", just like the Dollar Store:

Lumbar ESI : "One dolla'!"

Spinal cord stims: "One dolla'!"

Trigger point: "One dolla'!"

Medication refill: Now that's priceless.

I used advanced in my name after talking with marketing folks. Things get listed alphabetically. Even with optimizing your website with google, at&t, etc., things get listed alphabetically.

I liked "Acme Interventional Spine"......I could just picture Wile E Coyote helping me out.

Billy Bob's Fine Food

Eat here, or I'll kill ya.

Advanced Laser Oxycontin Institute of Stimulation Bar and Massage Parlor.

Liquor up front, stim em in the rear.

Agreed on anything with an "institute" in the name. Would have to be in an "institution" to work there.

Next door in the same strip mall is Bob's Mortuary

"You stab em, we slab em!"

Maybe "Advanced Laser VicoSomaX Institute and Center of Excellence for Fibromyalgia, Obesity and Anxiety"

i agree, I think by not "pain" in the name you are saying you do other treatments than just med management. While we understand what the title pain managment means- patients completely have another idea and their expectations may be just to get pain meds.
But there got to be more of variations other than just [xxx]sports and spine [xxx], any ideas?? But then again anything too long and they are likely not to remember it or worse off, be confused by what is are the services that you actually provide. hmmm

What message do you want people to get from your company name? The name cannot possibly tell all that you do.

If you look around the corporate world, most are named after people or are neologisms. There are not many companies that their name tells you what they do or sell. When you get to small companies, most do, just in order to survive - "City Dry Cleaning" , "Johnson's Pub and Grill" etc.

John W. Smith, MD is an ok name for a company (if your name happens to be John W. Smith 😀). It tells people you are a doctor. You can then write below that "Specializing in advanced treatment of painful and disabling conditions" or some such verbage to get your message across.

If you start getting too fancy, some docs who would refer to you might see you as too pompous or similar.
