Why is this structure called 4-(N-N-dimethylamino)pyridine and not N-N-dimethylamino)pyridine?

You want to designate where the second N atom is attached to the ring. If you don't specify, the name will become ambiguous.

The N in the ring could be anywhere. I wonder if you could name this para-(N-N-dimethylamino)pyridine 🙂
