I'm sorry but you can't be called the goat of anything if you are dropping out of important events because of "mental health issues". Can you imagine Jordan pulling out of the NBA finals because he felt too much pressure? SMH our country is going down the toilet.
Reddit angrily slams your comment and defends Simone's reasons to quit as valid and brave

Agree.

She just realized she wasn't mentally up for the Olympics? She could have pulled out before all of this and given her spot to someone who wanted it.

Seems like a waste.

I saw them calling her the goat during an interview and got the impression she was not at all comfortable with that.

i’m willing to cut her some slack. she’s been to the olympics and other high pressure contests multiple times and never had an issue like this before this so something is clearly up and we have no idea what all might be going on.

as was said previously, there’s a high risk of serious injury if you’re off.

Agreed. Can’t she just claim a hamstring injury or something like that to save face. What an embarrassment. Can’t imagine the Chinese or Russian athletes doing this....

Now I'm reading these articles about how these quitters are so brave and are the real champions for realizing their limits and not pushing themselves too hard. Christ...

I think you bring up an interesting point. She’s not doing it in the manner to save face.

Except she was in the middle of competing for her country and straight up just quit in the middle?

Eh. Maybe the realization that winning medals for USA gymnastics would help them recover in the court of public opinion was too much to bear. USA Gymnastics needed her more than she needs it. She has nothing left to prove. I’m willing to bet a lot of money that the sexual assault thing is playing a large role in the decision.

If she didn’t come, it would have played better. But I am not a GOAT, so wouldn’t know how their thinking process…..

I have mixed feelings on it. My daughter competed in gymnastics from age 5 until 18, topped out at a level 9, then decided 25-30 hours per week of practice was too much when she started college. So we intently watched Simone Biles and the others in the USA uniform for years. Biles is an amazing athlete and seems like a genuinely classy and good human being too. I'm inclined to give her the benefit of the doubt now.

Still, I wonder if her teammates (who took silver in the team competition) aren't just a little bit unhappy that their best gymnast wasn't there to help them win gold as the world expected. It's not like there's a whole lot of opportunities for gymnasts to earn $ and gain sponsorships outside the Olympics. They're not a certain tennis player who can drop out of a match, get eliminated early at the Olympics, and still have a bright high income future when the next of many tournaments starts.

Is it possible that Simone Biles thought she may hurt her team’s chances by remaining on the roster? I can’t imagine anybody wanted to win more than her.

She choked. Under all the pressure she couldn’t handle the situation. So she stepped back. I could see that she thought continuing to compete in her state of mind could lead to a dangerous injury and she probably was hurting her team more than anything but not being able to complete her moves or land properly. It’s too bad but happens to the best of us, clearly. It happens in all sports. It just so happens that in gymnastics you can’t hide it. The alternative was her to continue to compete but just take a notch down intentionally but with her head not in the game, probably would have had the same result. It’s tougher to overcome a mental injury than a physical one.

btw big kudos to Chiles who stepped into her place and did the best that she could. They should all still be really proud of themselves

People should live their lives how they want and not worry so much about what others think they should do.

I do think Simone will regret this decision in 20 years - but maybe not. Either way, I think people are too cruel to her.

If we want to be cruel to someone, be cruel to Fethi Nourine for dropping out of his Judo match because he didn't want to fight an Israeli. What a d-bag. That makes no sense to me. He looses by giving up and said that was honorable. I suspect he couldn't bare the idea of going home after a loss to a Jew (even though giving up is also a loss).

i agree. i initially was harsh on her but who am i to judge her for not being mentally ready. Its her own legacy that will suffer. Kerri Strug did what she did on a broken ankle and she was legendary for it, simone may regret it but she'll be fine.

I’m nitpicking here so bare with me…

Kerri Strug was on her last vault and hurt herself on the previous jump. I’m sure if Simone was at critical spot she would’ve dug deep. She was basically at the beginning and said “I’m not right” and probably knew she was hurting them more than helping the team. I can’t really be mad at that. Sure a way to get out of a shooting slump is to keep shooting but I feel like it’s a little different when doing flips in mid air

I’m hearing some comparisons with Kerri but these are kinda different. Hers was a physical injury that she overcame. Simone is a mental one. mental is more difficult to overcome. All these athletes have definitely trained and competed hurt no doubt.

You gotta be kidding me

I honestly have been inspired by this to quit my call taking job and transition to no call less money. Mental health is important

I like the money of call and we don't take it often but it does put me on edge the day before and causes back pain.

Who remembers Rick Ankiel?
Dude got to a point where he couldn’t throw a strike to save his life. I mean the balls were going into the stands. He ended switching to center field.
