Current M4, just matched into an EM program in the West. As a soon to be intern, do we apply for the individual personal NPI record/number or the NPI record for the Organization? They are different applications. whats the difference between the two? I'm confused!

My program took care of that for all of the incoming interns (and it would be the personal application). But, you need to take responsibility of changing / updating it as you move on.

I see. Thanks for answering that. For my learning purposes, NPI for an organization is a NPI number for the whole organization right? like a NPI number for a hospital/specific department?

That's my understanding. But, if you opened up your own private practice office, then you'd apply for an organizational one. They need to be able to enumerate all professionals (in a variety of disciplines, not just physicians), but they also want to track the organizations (which would include any business or clinic, like even the non-profits). I'm not 100% sure if individual departments are separately enumerated (I presume that the hospital would have a single number rather than separate ones for each department, but that should be easy to check).

Yes, you apply for the individual NPI number. And while you're a student, you can't list a license (because you don't have one yet), so make sure your taxonomy code is something like 'student in accredited program' or something. And then once you get your license, you can update it to indicate that you're in whatever field you're doing.

And be sure to put your program's address, not your personal one. This is publicly available information on the internet, and you don't want random people to know that information. You can put your own phone number--this will make it easier for pharmacies to get in contact with you--but, again, it's probably better to put a quick contact number with your program.

how quick has the turnaround been for people applying?

What??? I did it online 2 weeks ago and still no email. I called them and gave them my tracking number and they said it could take up to 27 days for them to process it.
I got mine in ~2 minutes after I submitted. Check your email. The subject that contained the number was "National Provider Identifier". The actual number was hidden in the middle of all the text.

Spam folder?
I couldn't make a new account with the same SSN. I looked everywhere in my email and all I found was this email I got after I registered:

My email specifically said that my NPI was issued and I confirmed it by going to the NPI public registry. Perhaps you can search there based on your name and see if it's been already created in their system?

I think I probably know what must have happened. Did you start the application process after registering your account?

Creating an account and then applying for NPI are two separate things.
Yes, I created the account first and then I did the NPI application via my account profile. I checked the NPI public registry and it said there was no NPI number associated with my account. I clicked the link to register and it says my application status is still pending. I called NPI a few days ago to ask what's up and the lady said my NPI application was received and that it's taking 14-27 days to process the applications. I'll try calling again tomorrow because I literally can't do anything else. It won't let me access my current application and it won't let me create a new account.

Sorry to hear about the delay! This was my first time ever and I have a foreign name so I wonder if there's an internal logic in the NPI system that compares your name with others with similar names in the system and the. If there's some degree of match then they take longer to process those application. This is purely speculation on my part. I didn't know what to expect when applying for it online. I was also under the impression that it would take up to 15 days or so. When I log on to my account, it shows my NPI status as active and also shows my NPI number. I searched by my first and last name in the registry after I received the email, I was able to locate myself. I never searched for myself in the NPI registry before applying for one.

I'm in the same boat. I also called and was told the same thing...so at least we're both waiting together... 🙁
This is really weird! Good luck to you both! I'm questioning if my NPI is real . Well it's in the registry .. It certainly was an automated kind of process for me so apparently there may be cases where it generates right away and else it needs more elaborate review like someone looking at the application etc.

Will need more cases to establish any pattern.

Same here, I applied for my NPI 10 days ago and still waiting!!

I just called and they tried to brush me off again saying it will say up to 23 days to be reviewed. They said some people get their number instantly because they pass some filter. They told me to call back on Monday and I told them I needed the number urgently because my hospital's due date is before Monday. He got his supervisor to review my application and found I put the student taxonomy code in the license box when I should have left the license number box blank. They flagged my application for review because someone else had put a matching number for license. They took the code out of the license box and said I would get my NPI number today yay!
