Natural Toothpaste?

I am sure you have all seen the Tom's of Maine Natural Toothpaste in the oral hygiene isle. I have always used traditional Crest, Colgate etc. brands and always kind of weary of natural toothpaste even though I'm into organic foods and all that stuff.

I was wondering, is natural toothpaste equal to conventional toothpaste?

I think it's probably most important that your toothpaste is ADA approved, which not all toothpastes are. Tom's of Maine is.

It is far inferior if it doesn't contain fluoride. Most Tom's of Maine toothpastes cater to the anti-fluoride conspiracy theorists (and others that don't want fluoride for whatever reason), so they make toothpastes with silica and baking soda and that sort of thing. (Both of which are in traditional toothpastes...basically, everything but the F-)

There are too many studies to name that show the benefit of fluoride in toothpastes and water and in dental school you'll learn the percentages of F- that are dangerous to human organs (no fluoridated water could contain that much; the worst that can happen is fluorosis.) So I'd say that you are losing an extremely valuable preventive tool if there is no fluoride. If there is, it's the same as all other toothpastes.

Oh, and I think Tom's also makes a toothpaste that advertises that it contains calcium to strengthen teeth...unless you swallow it, that's not going to provide much help, either! 🙄
