Have any of you Navy doc's seen the new NWU's being rolled out yet? Just curious if you've worn them or seen them and what your thoughts are on them.

I have seen them, but not in the hospital. I liked wash khakis and jumpers personally. Don't think I would wear those in the field.

you mean you wouldn't want to wear something straight out of streetfighter: the movie?

They either stole the design from the People's Army of Derkaderkastan or from Dr. Evil's henchmen. I'm still waiting for my royalties check for allowing them to use my old flight boots as a model for the "optional no-shine boots".

In what terrain exactly is that camouflage supposed to make you blend in?

The NWU is being rolled out by geographical region. The Hampton Roads area was the first and the rest will be phased in over the next year and a half or so.

I think the intent is to camoflauge oil/paint stains for those who are working aboard ship and not to necessarily camoflauge you.

Ah. I thought that because the military is overmanned right now that the Navy tried to develop a dark blue pattern that would make you very hard to find if you fell overboard.

ROFL.

On a related note, what's the deal with the new officers' service khakis? When are we expected to be sporting them?

the year 1945?

Classic, the "New, but old" service khakis....I haven't heard much movement on those as of late. They were tossing around the idea of having them come back as an optional uniform, but I haven't a clue when they expect to okay them for the fleet. Personally, I think they are nice but will probably not spend the 400-500 bucks it would likely cost to get a set.

This is the other argument people had for why they didn't like them. I think it's bunk because what do you currently wear on a ship? Blue coveralls.....so what's the difference? Plus if you're in the drink the only thing above the water is your head anyway, so what does it matter what you're wearing. And plus the trousers would be easier to take off and inflate than the coveralls.

I will miss the happy pockets and command ball caps though.

Absolutely not trying to start a flame war here, but I am pretty sure that since 1775, no Marine has ever been jealous over all the patches soldiers wear. In fact, I worked with a lot of guys who resented having name tapes on their utilities--too much emphasis on individuality!

I'm with NavyFP. I just want a sash. South American Despot style.

Maybe it's just me, but I like the way the old-school Navy officers uniforms looked. Although the guy's uniform looks horribly tailored:

Hell, if we're doing the retro thing, why not take Army uniforms back to the classic WW2 look too?

If the new NWUs are supposed to hide daily grime, maybe the medical corps should push for a working uniform to replace the non-standard, non-regulation white coat. Maybe a nice digital brown/red/yellow pattern.

I believe the white coat would fall under 'Organizational Clothing' so therefore would be 'regulation'. If you ever notice the ones worn by lab personel they are almost always stamped with US Navy on them, if you want you can get one too, but most people prefer their own.

Gotta love those brown shoes. Aren't the aviators pretty touchy about the non-flying types wearing "their" shoes? 😕

It looks like he might have wings, but doesn't the cover insignia look like an eagle?

Hmmmmm Captain on the cover, Commander on the boards.
Probably just my old eyes.
