Navy spouse location during serving

Hi I am a HPSP dental student. I want to ask when I start serving in the Navy. Is it true if I am stationed on a base then my wife can stay with me, but if I am sent on a ship, then my wife will stay on the base? how does it work for the spouse? thank you

If you are stationed on a base, you can take your family with you. If you are stationed on a ship, you and your family will live on or near base where that ship is homeported. When the ship gets underway (goes out to sea), you will go with it, leaving your family behind. There are a few billets that are unaccompanied tours, which means that you can't bring your family with you when you get stationed there, but there are very few of those.
