Anyone got a feel yet for the rough percentiles of the NBDE 1 scores?

I'm thinking:

95 = 90th
90 = 75th
85 = 50th
80 = 25th
75 = 10th

The percentile is on the back of the score card - its no mystery.

Score Percentile

99 100
96-98 99.3
93-95 97.1
90-92 91.2
87-89 79.1
84-86 60.6

Acutually - the card shows the cumulative percent which is the percentage of people who would be expected to score up - to a certain score. (or less than that score - so if you got 96, then 99.3% of the students should score less than that) %ile is the amount of people scoring the same or less than you.

That answers that. Thanks Dr Rob.

actually that doesnt answer it for me... why the range from 96-98 in the 99.3%ile? and a person who gets 96 and a person who gets 98 both have 99.3% of test takers who scored less than them??? dr. rob is there a simpler explanation? and i dont have a score card since i havent taken the test before. 😀

so someone got 95 what does that mean? 97.1% of all candidates who took the test scored below him/her???

i thought they had some reference group and some conversion according to how tough the individual questions were too?

ok maybe i am slow on the uptake but i would still like someone to explain this system to me!!😛

Are you saying that you would actually like them to differentiate between a 99.3%ile and a 99.7%ile?

If not, then why the problem that a 96, 97, and 98 equal the same %ile?

And yes, your explanation is correct. A 95 average would mean that he/she scored better than 97.1% of all the other candidates.

yes gavin .......very stange!

and no i dont really care about a 0.1% difference.... i was just trying to be a nit-picky-type 😀 (actually i was jus trying to figure it out).

and btw 99.3 and 97.1 %s are quite worlds apart. i did not say 99.3 and 99.7..........

my question was ....if one person got a raw score of 93 and another got a raw score of 95, does that mean they both have the same percentile? strange. and is the percentile the "average" and "subject wise "score that we get on our score reports?

u see i havent taken this part 1 test thingy so i am clueless as to what the hallowed score card actually looks like 🙄 ......and being a "foreign trained dentist", with such limited knowledge of the mysterious machinations of the english language, makes me very slow on the uptake apparently.........:laugh:

The score difference still stands even if the given percentile range is broad and encompasing. Maybe too much emphasis is placed upon the exam. The most important factor is that each dental student eventually passes all sections. The next most important factor in my opinion is that the deans of each dental school can get a rough reference point on how they are preparing their students. The third most important factor would be for those who are seeking to get into ortho, oms, and maybe endo right out of dental school.
