hello all,

i was just wondering how is the NBDE scored?...is it scored on a percent basis, for example, if u get say 20 wrong out of a 100 questions...that means an 80% BUT does that equate to a score of 80?

would luv to know...thanks 😉

No it doesn't, I found this on ADA's website, I hope it helps: 🙂

Scoring of the Examination

Two factors affect a candidate's score: the number of correct answers selected by the candidate and the score scale conversion for the examination. For National Board Dental Examinations, there is no penalty for selecting an incorrect response. A candidate's score is based on the total number of correct answers recorded on his or her answer sheet. If two or more answers are marked by a candidate for the same test item, credit is not awarded. If a test item does not meet the objectives of the testing program, the Joint Commission will exclude the test item from scoring. Also, on any edition of the examination, up to 15 percent of the items may be administered in order to determine if they meet established standards of quality. These items are not included in the scoring process and, therefore, do not contribute to candidates' scores.

The conversion scale used to score a new edition of an examination is based upon the performance of a well-defined reference group. This group consists of all students enrolled in dental schools with approval accreditation status and who are being examined for the first time. To insure consistency in the scoring process, a comparison is made between the performance of this group and previous reference groups. The score of 75 is used by the Joint Commission to reflect the minimum passing score on an examination. The score scales for Part I Examinations are determined by reference to performance standards established in 1982. Although score scales are established in terms of reference group performance, they are applied uniformly to all candidates who took the examination.

Generally, National Board results are reported in standard scores of 49 to 99. Under some circumstances a zero is reported. A score of below 75 is considered a failure and does not earn National Board credit.
