Hello, So I am really bummed that I got 84% on NBME 13 but only ended up with 223! How is that possible? Is this an accurate indication of where I will score on step? What confuses me is that the conversion factor for people who take it offline places my 84% at 235. Can someone please explain this to me?

This is a normal percent conversion for the NBMEs as they are generally easier than the real test. However, NBME 13 is an outdated exam and really should not be used for anything other than seeing the questions.

Take the other NBMEs and see how you do; personally I think 17 and 18 are the most predictive.

so which score should i trust more, the 223 or the 235?

I wouldn't trust either for 13, I don't think it's a good predictor of anything. The more recent NBMEs will give you a much better idea.

it is frustrating bc i scored 80% on the free 117 question practice test, which correlates to 230+. i took that 1 week ago, too.

What are your feelings on predictive value of NBME 19?

It's a good test with good questions but the scale is absurd; I think 90% correct translates to somewhere in the 230-235 range if I'm not mistaken. The problem with a scale like this is a few silly mistakes could drop your score 20+ points, which would never be the case on the real thing.

So I'd take the test but not pay much attention to the score, unless it was in the failing range.
