a 42 y/o man has a tepmerature of 39.2 C (102.6 F) & mild jaundice 2 days after transfusion of packed red cells for the treatment of chronic anemia. laborarory studies show hyperbilirubinemia & amild increase in serum lactate dehydrogenase activity. which of the following findings will most likely be observed on analysis of peripheral blood cells?

A) complement protein C3bi bound to monocytes
B) degranulated neutrophils
C) erythrocyte ghosts
D) HLA-DR upergulation in circulating CD3+ T lynphocytes
E) immunoglobulin bound to erythrocytes
F) nucleated erythrocytes

I found this question to be pretty confusing, the unofficial answer that came with this question was E. Can anyone explain the reasoning behind that answer choice and what are the other choices mean?

I've never heard of erythrocyte ghosts or HLA-DR upregulation or anything like that... Thank you in advance.

E. Delayed Hemolytic Transfusion Rxn.

No idea what the others mean, lol...

Erythrocyte ghosts are usually an after effect of osmotic haemolysis, like in the osmotic fragility test.

HLA-DR upregulation merely means MHC-II upregulation.
