Thats why they call it an assessment.

You take the test, they give you a score.

I took the untimed option, and took notes on the hard questions while taking the test. That way, I could look up the ones that I was really uncertain about.

Do you think it's better to take the untimed version and take notes, or just do the timed one?
Also, how soon before the actual test date do you recommend taking an NBME assessment?

I did the same thing as kcrd, i took the timed test and wrote notes on the ones i wasn't sure about. make sure that you take time to look up the correct answers because a lot of the same concepts (if not the same question) can show up on the real exam.

How or when you decide to take the assessment depends on how closely you want to mimic real test taking conditions. If you want to gauge your progress, you can take on one early on in your study schedule and then the other later. On the other hand, if you're just focusing on questions, when it's closer to your actual exam date, you can take both later on. I chose the latter and I'm happy with my decision. I used a lot of different question resources, so I gauged my progress that way. I took both exams about a week apart starting 10 days before my exam date, this way, those questions were still fresh in my mind.

Thanks a lot for your response!! I am just wondering though - if you took the timed test, how did you write down notes on the questions? I guess the untimed test would make it easier to do that, but then, you wouldnt be simulating exam conditions, under time pressure.
Maybe, I can take one timed and the other one untimed.

Lets say you get some obscure question about the mechanism of a cellular receptor. You just jot down the name of the receptors listed, what the suggested action is, etc. and look it up later on. Thats what I did.

As far as when, I took the first one 8 days before and the 2nd one 2 days before.
