I am a fourth year osteopathic medical student, through VSAS i had signed up for a clinical rotation for Emergency medicine at an allopathic School of Medicine. They had their own students working through the department as well and get some students from other schools rotating through that location.

I got my schedule a day or so before and it lists that I will be required to take an NBME Subject (allopathic Shelf Exam) exam at the end.

I have no problem studying for the exam, nor do I blame or am whining. My questions are as follows, is it okay for a osteopathic student to take an allopathic exam? How do I sign up for the exam, in my third year I took and passed a number of my COMAT's, however, they were through my school. Do I sign up for NBME or is it the site's responsibility to sign me up for it?

I had imagined I would be taking the Emergency COMAT and had purchased FA for EM, Case Files EM and COmquest question bank for EM. What are the sources required for NBME exams, what kind of question bank?

Thank you for your help!

Also, NBME is somewhat better and has some self-assessment, are there any such self-assessments for EM Subject exam and how representative are they of the actual exam?

Highly recommend addressing all of this with the clerkship director of the course. You cannot expect someone on here to know the answer to the questions regarding legistics of signing up.

I am an osteopathic student and our school has us do the NBME shelf exams during our 3rd year. I am not sure how to register for them because it was all done through our school. For studying I think the resources you have are fine, most of our class used case files and UWorld during our 3rd year to study. NBME also has self assessments you can purchase for $20/test and I think those are extremely helpful. They are very similar to what you will see on the shelf exam.
