NCSU, KSU, UT, Oregon

Hello! I’m starting to narrow down the schools I’m interested in attending from my acceptances. I still have to hear from 5 schools but was wondering if anyone has any insight on the programs for NCSU, KSU, UT, and Oregon. I’ve done some research but would like more information! I am OOS for all. I currently have a strong interest in shelter med <3

Pick NCSU. It’s likely your cheapest option, though I think Oregon is also may be on the cheaper side if that’s one of the schools that lets you get residency after a year? And yeah, shelter med is one of the easier fields to find PSLF options for, but it also sometimes means lower pay. You’ll get a good education at any of them. A minor plus of NCSU is that it’s close to some of the well known shelter med externship things like humane alliance in Asheville or whatever and the south always has a big shelter animal problem. But there’ll be shelter options at any of the schools I’m sure and there’s nothing wrong with any of your other options either. But I’d pick NCSU in a heartbeat if it were me.

Oregon does not allow you to switch to IS tuition but the OOS tuition is fairly reasonable. Corvallis receives 40” of rain a year so be prepared for that (approx 9 months of gray clouds and rain) They have a good relationship with Oregon Humane society and it’s a required 4th year rotation. The students I’ve talked to there seem to feel there are enough spay/neuter opportunities during third and 4th year [emoji4]

I also found out that 4 years at NCSU with one year of OOS tuition and 3 years of IS tuition is cheaper than 4 years at my in state school haha

Why not K State? I will be going there. They have a certificate program for Shelter Medicine. Everyone talks about how friendly and caring the student body and faculty are. How helpful everyone is… of course, I didn’t even apply to the other schools you are accepted to, so I don’t know much about them, but K State just seems really nice. A small class so small class sizes…

There’s nothing wrong with Kstate at all. I actually interviewed for a job there. But their cost of attendance for OOS is listed for 2025 as 81,102/yr for a total COA of ~$325,000 (before factoring in annual cost increases and accruing interest) and NCSU lets you switch to in-state after the first year, so their COA is 215k (again, based on 2025 numbers and not accounting for increases). That’s $110,000 difference…which is a huge amount of money. Kstate may be great, but imo there’s nothing they could possibly provide which is worth paying $110,000 more than a cheaper option when the end outcome (a DVM) is the same in both situations.
