Anyone else get bad neck/lower back pain from looking down at your textbook and notes for so long?

Anyone come up with any creative ideas to avoid this or help relieve this? (Stretching doesn't seem to help much.)

Are you sitting in a chair with good support? You may want to invest in a book stand that will keep your textbooks in front of your face. Keep doing stretches. They're good for you.

Maybe sitting at a different height will give you relief. See if you can find an adjustable chair and locate the most comfortable position. I also recommend a book stand (I use one myself).

Anyone have experience with stand up desks?

I am thinking of setting one up at home when I go to med school.

if you get a stand up desk, make sure it's one you can lower back down too because i've seen that people get them and then hate that it's ONLY a standing desk.

Try sitting on a yoga ball instead of a chair. It forces you to have an upright posture (or you fall off, hahah) which should prevent neck/back pain.

Stretching every day. Upper trap and rotator cuff, look up some stretches, do each side 3 times for 30 seconds. It'll change your life.

Go get some OMT. 😉

^ that looks so uncomfortable and like something my patellas would hate

I lie on my side and position a book accordingly to give my neck a break.

Hmm. I never had this issue but could it be because of bad vision that some people might have this problem?

Feet up, lean back.
I never study with my feet at floor level.

Get a book stand so you don't have to bend so much: http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss_1/175-2036960-2948662?url=search-alias=aps&field-keywords=book stand&sprefix=book st,aps&rh=i:aps,k:book stand

Use tables and chairs that are an appropriate height whenever possible. I personally have a long torso. In other words, the distance from my butt to my shoulders is longer than for most people. I've noticed that when I sit at a low table using a high chair, it causes me to slouch which in turn, causes a pains in my back and neck. If I'm stuck using a low table, then sometimes I'll sit on a stool or on the lowest chair I can find so I don't have to slouch so much.
