I'm currently a junior major in business management but now I want to switch over to medicine b/c I'm searching for a more "meaning" career. I can finish up all my prereqs before I graduate and then take the MCAT. I plan on taking a year off and moving to florida to get in-state residency and hopefully get admitted to USF.

Small problem! I don't have the best GPA (~2.9) but i still have two years to bring it up. I don't know how hard my business and science courses are going to be, especially taking them together. However I'm shooting for a 3.3. Seeing that i do well on the MCAT and start volunteering at the local hospital what do you think are my chances of getting in???? USF is my ideal school! I am an URM if you think that might help me get in. I would love everyon'e $.02 (good and bad)

I went into Business b/c it seemed like the safest thing to do, but since my internship it just seems like i'm a paper pusher. I want to be able to go to work and feel like I made a difference. I would much rather enjoy helping others than entering data into computers. If i explain this in my personal statement (in a more eloquent way of course) think i have a chance?

In a nut shell: WHAT DO I NEED TO DO TO GET IN??? :scared:

2.9 gpa for an undergrad business major?? i hope your good at science or extremely dedicated because just switching gears like that AND taking the MCAT in 2 years or less is a pretty tough task.. just get ur gpa >3.5 and MCAT 30 ..thats usually the standard for allo schools

Buckle down and get that GPA up a bit and you'll be fine.

Here's my story, hopefully it will help you:

I recieved my B.S. in Business Administration from the University of Colorado in 2003. Worked the next year in Phoenix and, like you, decided that there was more to life that being a "paper pusher." As such, I moved to Montana and am currently attending a community college to finish up on any unfinished science prereqs. I took the MCAT with only a a semester and a half of physics, chemistry, and biology under my belt (no O-chem or A&P - both which would have been very helpful! 🙂 ) and did decent. In my personal statement I explained the reason why the sudden change of gears - but also related healthcare to business - in hopes that my business degree is looked upon as an asset, not a liability.

So far, I've received 3 interview invites and am optomistic I will be accepted somewhere. 😀

So my advice to you would be to finish up your business degree, get those science prereqs done, take the MCAT (either after the prereqs are done or during the course of them) and apply! From my interviews thus far, it seems that the commitees are much more interested in life experiences than numbers!

Good luck!

I also am finishing my degree in Business this semester. I only have a 3.3 overall GPA, but a 3.8 in scinece, so changing gears and doing well is very possible. I did average on MCAT, 25, and have also received 3 interviews already, and still waiting for more once my LOR's get in. So, good luck, with some hard work you can raise your GPA and get accepted to med school.
