Need advice deciding on what path to take.

I feel like I am in a rut and desperately need some advice on where I should be heading with the situation I am currently in.

I graduated from college in 2010 with a BSc in Biology. my amas BCMP gpa is 3.2 while my undergrad amas gpa is 3.09. While in school I worked at the local hospital as a nurse techician and a telemetry technician. I havent have a lot of voluntary work to write home about. I took the MCAT twice. The first time I got a score of 24. I wanted to improve my score so I took it again however, I did very poorly and just got a 18. Disappointed, I did not apply to medical school last year. Instead I took the GRE ( Verbal score: 500, quantitative score: 650) and proceeded to apply to grad school with the idea of doing my masters in Public health. I wanted to improve my credentials before I applied to Med schools. Last week, I got a rejection letter from Univ of Michigan's MPH Global health program and I am waiting on 2 other schools, but now I am anxious if they too will reject my application then I have to start from square one.

I have been going through the forum on post bacc and SMP's, something which I wasnt aware of before....my bad, because I should have researched more, yet if someone would give me some advice on if I should or if I can even apply to SMPs/ post bacc with my current credentials, then I would be very grateful.

MPH will slightly help you out.


Your best bet are post-baccs that will give you an MCAT prep. You could apply to those with a GRE score. Search around the forum.

If you're admitted to one of the programs for Fall 2011 entrance, kill the MCAT (aim for 30+) and the post-bacc. Apply next cycle MD and DO (June 2012) when your post-bacc grades are available.

You could also re-take MCAT, but taking it after a 3rd time is unheard of and you should do everything in your power to score high (3 months with 40 hours a week studying, no part-time job or classes). Continue volunteering and shadowing. Work this upcoming year or take science classes to help your uGPA - Get A's. Apply to SMP's in December 2011 for Fall 2012 entrance. Apply June 2012 cycle to MD and DO. However, medical schools won't get your SMP grades. So the very best chance you can give yourself for medical school admission is applying June 2013 for Fall 2014 entrance

Assuming you received a 30+ on MCAT, received A's in undergraduate science classes you took during this year, killed the SMP, bumped up your patient contact through hospital volunteering, and maybe even did some research, I'd say you would def get interviews at DO schools and maybe some MD schools.

But the MCAT will be your determining factor.
