Hey guys,

Right now I'm a 1st year turning 2nd year this September pulling a overall gpa of 3.386 and a sci gpa of 3.4 at University of California Irvine as a bio major. Currently taking chem and chem lab at uci for summer session which i think i can pull at least an A- in both class and hopefully that will bump my gpa higher.

Any advice on what and when I need to do next to improve my chances? I know I need to start shadowing as soon as possible. I also need to pull my gpa up, but what else would you suggest I should do before I submit my application. I wouldn't mind going to any dental school, but it is my goal to attend any Cali school. And what do you think my chances are getting in if my gpa stays at this number?

Thanks for the advice guys, and hopefully one day I can be on this forum giving advice!

I think your GPA is a little low. Its better to aim high rather than regret it like myself. You're ok right now because you only finished one year so there is still time to pull it up. Aim for A's (not A-)! Of course, your DAT will play a critical role, but focus on your GPA for now. If you want to save time, learn your bio, chem, and orgo solid while you are taking your classes so you don't have to relearn them while studying for the DAT. Like me - again. 😀

Try to improve your GPA, preferably to around a 3.5 range. Be well rounded, shadowing is a must, but some EC activities like research/TA can only help as well.

And when you do apply, apply broadly and early. Good luck!

Thanks guys, you advice really helped me to focus on what i really need to improve on. I really do need to pull that gpa up as high as possible. Anyone have any suggestion on when I should take my dcat and submit my application. I wanna know the best time so I can set my future schedule up to study best for that test.🙂

Although this is out of context, sometimes I feel as if attending UCI rather than a state college (although they are good as well) was a mistake. My uncle and friends who are attending a state college are doing so well on their grades in all the science courses and they're not even trying. I know for sure if i was to attend that college i would be pulling atleast 3.7+. Oh well, I gotta just buckle down and work with what I have.
