Need Advice // Jobless ...where to look?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I would suggest looking into a Temp agency or something along those lines. Also... medical school is not a sure thing. You should have a plan B.

I am a Biology pre-med (been accepted to medical school), and I currently work in a bank doing office stuff. I use to work in research, but funding ran out.

Focus on a job that pays the bills. I wish you the best of luck with medical school applications.

Since you just graduated from college - I'm assuming your cheap and not really looking for a high paying job (probably can live off of 12-15 dollars an hour/full time).

There are a few medical jobs that you can try for - search for Medical scribe jobs in a ER - some small private practices try to hire pre-med college graduates as medical assistants - If you have some time you could take an EMT course and work for a while (although this can require some time and cash and if your accepted this cycle then i wouldnt do it).

If your confident your going to get in this cycle - just do a fun job. Wait tables, bartend, go home and live with the parents for a while and mooch. There is nothing wrong with that.

Aww cute. Well, I guess you are trying, so that's the first step.

I would personally recommend a medically related job, just so you get further exposure in the field and hopefully gain a deeper appreciation of those who might be working with or underneath you. Hospitals usually have their own website, but they are big companies and usually slow. Many small clinics usually post on Craigslist. Also, you could begin volunteering at a hospital and try to gain entry to an opening that way while also boosting your application. Lastly, it's nice because the medical field usually comes with decent health insurance, so you don't have to make your parents keep spending money for your insurance each month.

If those are not options, food service is a great area. Many post on craigslist, or you can bring your resume to a restaurant and ask to speak with the manager. Pros: Usually flexible hours, possibly tips, hopefully a fun environment, deeper appreciation of service field. Cons: Likely no health insurance, does not always come with security in hours or job.

Or if you have a penchant for fashion, perhaps a position in retail might be suitable for you. Although they usually come with low pay and no health insurance, for some the discount on clothes is more important.

So, like medical school, apply broadly, be brave and go into places to talk to the hiring staff, and push for the jobs you want. For whatever you do, remember, that Medical School is NOT a guarantee. Even though you may feel that working a full-time job is a lot, there's many of us who work full time, have families, and continue to volunteer because the competition isn't over until you're in. Good luck! 😀

If you live close enough to a medical school or university, apply there for any position. Clinical research (with people) and regulatory administration (dealing with the federal regulations for human subjects and/or animal research) are two areas that aren't bench research. Administrative jobs are good, too.

Consider applying for subsitute teacher jobs.

This. If you don't want to do research, a scribe job is awesome! You learn a TON basically all of which is related to being a doctor. You essentially get paid for shadowing, which is outstanding. I do it on the side of a research job, and I love it. Hands down awesomeness. I don't know where you live, but google EMSS, they have programs all over the country.

Medical scribe is an excellent opportunity for people in your position
