Hi, I'm an upcoming college freshman. I am in pre-pharmacy where I will take 2 years of undergrad and 4 years of pharmacy school. I showed one of my friends who's pretty smart my fall schedule, and he said it was crazy (academically rigorous crazy).

Check out my schedule.

BIOL-201 3.00 HUMAN BIOLOGY
BIOZ-201 1.00 HUMAN BIOLOGY LABORATOR
CHEM-101 3.00 GENERAL CHEMISTRY I
CHEZ-101 1.00 GENERAL CHEMISTRY LAB
ENGL-101 3.00 WRITING & RHETORIC WORK
MATH-200 4.00 CALCULUS ANALYTIC GEOME
SOCY-101 3.00 HONORS: GENERAL SOCIOLO

Is this too crazy? Is tripling up (taking chem, bio, and math) a good idea?

No worries. That is surely doable. 16-18 hours per semester is the norm for pre-professional students. College is hard... mostly a sharp learning curve on how to manage your time. If you can learn time management skills early, you'll do fine. Study hard but don't forget to make time for play. You can do it! Good luck.

Based on your name, I'd say yes. But, if the pre reqs for your school also include micro and physics I & II, you don't have much of a choice. Unless, of course, you don't mind taking classes in the summer.

By all means,

You are taking a heavy courseload, but not insanely so. I think as long as you study and do your work, you can do just fine. You may want to take a few courses during the following summer, so when you are taking harder classes such as Organic 1 &2 you aren't killing yourself elsewhere.

good luck !

My first year:

Intro Biology + Lab
General Chemistry + Lab
Physics (w/ calc) + Lab
Math, second semester had a lab.
English.

5 courses each term, 3 labs first semester, 4 labs second semester (plus the ridiculous EM Physics) and english on top of it.

DEAL WITH IT

😀

That actually looks pretty normal to me.

My first semester this fall is:

Organic Chemistry and lab
Biology and lab
Microeconomics
Statistics
and a Writing class

It looks pretty close to mine. You're just going to have to deal with the heavy courseload and if you are a good student, I'm sure you will do fine!

If you're not working insane hours, definitely doable. 🙂

This looks exactly lke my schedule a year ago. But you would have to take out writing and add PSY101, A&P, and Physics 1. 25 hours total. But, I was only working about 16 hours a week. Got all A's though!

At UNC, they only let freshmen take one lab their first semester, just because most college freshmen need to focus on figuring out the whole "college" thing. Although there's no doubt many would be able to handle it, you probably don't want to burn yourself out on the first semester.

On the other hand, last semester, I had:

Intro Inorganic Chem 2 hrs
Intro Org Chem II 3 hrs
Intro Org Chem Lab II 1 hr
Medical Microbiology w/ lab 4 hrs
Intro Public Policy 3 hrs
Intro Stats 3 hrs

My semester GPA was 3.750. I also worked 20+ hrs a week and stayed involved in activities. You know your abilities better than anyone else.

It too looks quite normal to me. My 1st semester at a 6 yr school was...

Gen chem + Lab (4)
Physics + Lab (4)
English (4)
Psychology (4)
Economics (3)

18 credit hours. That was my easiest semester. Now it's about 2x harder than that.

The last 3 years, every quarter was at least 20 credit hours except for one quarter and it was 18. I remember always taking 3 science courses and then some GEC or english.

Thx for your advice/support. Looks like a ton of students have gone through what I will go through.

Yeah that schedule seems pretty normal for any science major. I'm guessing your friend was not a science major.

My first year went something like this:
Advanced Chem + Lab
Engineering Physics + Lab
Calculus II
God, I don't even remember what else I took.. how bad is that?

I think biology was really easy...
Good luck!

Well,
College isnt like high school. I took bio, chem, writing, too my first quarter,. But im not sure how you're gonna do all that load w/ calc.
In college, its totally diff, you cant j/ study and do well. You gotta really study study. Mayb you should take calc next quarter and see how you feel about the other classes first.
But thats j/ my opinion... If you can handle all that load, more power to you. =) good luck

Hi, I'm a pre - med student who is struggling with fall schedule. I'm thinking to take gen physics, biochem, and genetics together but the people that I've talked to so far told me to take 2 science out of those 3 because all 3 of them are time-consuming and hard. I'm psyched out and don't know what to do because I plan on taking the MCAT next year in spring so I don't know what to do. I would appreciate everyone's advice and help!!

Your schedule is nothing crazy. It really just depends on your work ethic. As a freshmen, maybe it's a good idea to ease into your science/math courses your first semester because if your time management sucks, you're going to be overwhelmed.
