I recently got my step 1 score and it was a 214. Does anyone know what my chances are for a residency in I.M, and my chances for cardiology.

Any advice would be great.

Your chances are 50%

Stats 101. either you get it or you don't

Stats 201.

Chance of matching into IM. 1/2
Chance of matching into cardio. 1/2
Chance of matching into IM and cardio: 1/2*1/2 = 1/4.

So O/P....u basically have 25% chance of matching into IM and cardio regardless of ur score. j/k

hmm...I think a 214 (around mean) is pretty competitive. not sure how much step i goes into cardio though. maybe step 2 would be more important?

Cardiology fellowships will not look at your step I score, but they WILL look at your recommendations and the institution at which you did your residency, as well as your contributions to academic literature. For these purposes, it is much better to complete your residency at a major academic center than at a smaller community hospital, and of course the residencies you are accepted into are influenced (not determined!) by your step I score. Cause and effect.

But a good showing third year and strong recommendations will likely compensate a fair amount for an average or less-than-average board score. Bottom line -- your entire future does not hinge on this test. Good luck!

p.s. I'm only an ms3 so what the hell do I know anyways. 😳

For most competitive fellowships it depends more on where you come from, who you know, and how many publications in that area you have. Go for the best IM program you can get into, do as many research projects in cards you can get your hands into, and get to know the chief of cards really well.
