Hello all,

I will be attending college soon, and I will start to take the prerequisites for medical school. I am a bit confused and worried about some things, so any advice or experience will help. One thing is: how do general biology labs work? I haven't taken lab for biology since 9th grade. Would it be a problem if I felt confused during lab? Do professors expect you to know what you're doing? For example, knowing the equipment, how to measure, etc. Are there procedures and instructions to explain what to do, and how to do it? Also, will professors help you? I am really hoping to do well in my first year, so any advice will help. Thank you for reading this.EDIT- Can someone tell me how hard would it be to pull an A in lab? I am worried since I would be new.

They will not expect you to have any prior experience with the equipment! Read the procedure a couple times before going to lab and you will be just fine.

Thank you; I really appreciate that.

Any other advice is appreciated.

if your lab manual sucks, google your lab subject. Much better write ups for most labs can be found online.

If you address your concerns on day 1, the professor is more likely to be patient and work with you. If you wait until you really get stuck on something, the professor may view it as lack of motivation/laziness. Always ask for help early on rather than later!

Thank you for all the responses, they have really helped. Can someone tell me how hard would it be to pull an A in lab? I am worried since I would be new.

It depends on the school. At mine, as long as you showed up and put in decent effort, you received an A.

Labs are generally easy to get an A in but it depends on the class. Some will have prelab assignments, lab reports, or exams/quizzes so your grade will depend on how well you do in those. I don't remember getting less than an A in any lab except for microbio which I think was only because the professor graded so harshly.
