I am third year osteopathic student interested in a Neurology Residency...I am a horrible standardized test taker...My COMLEX score was a 530 and my USMLE a 209...I know these arent great scores aren't great...As far as my grades are concerned...I would say that I have a B+ average...What are my chances of getting a neuro residency...Am I dreaming and what can I do to improve my chances. What are considered good scores for a neuro residency on both the COMLEX and USMLE Step I and Step II?

I appreciate any advice or input anyone has to offer...thanks!

The first thing is not to give up especially because of board scores or grades. You can take Step 2 and bring that aspect up, but the residency committees are looking for more than just numbers. Hopefully you are getting good rotation evaluations, get some good letters of recommendation from those preceptors, especially when you do that neuro rotation. I know a guy who failed Step 1 three times, passing it finally on the 4th try. He still got a very good residency because he had rotated at the place he was interested in and worked hard and was liked by all. Go for it and don't let anything hold you back!

A friend of mine (MD) failed the boards (step 1-and a 200 the 2nd time), did fine in 3rd year (B+ usually), felt like he couldn't get in anywhere, but tried and ended up at his first choice neuro program last year...i don't think you'll have a problem, just apply wisely

You can certainly match into a neurology residency with your score. Just make sure you do your research on where to apply and apply broadly. Try to get strong clinical evals and letters of rec.

Agree with previous posters. Try to get a GREAT letter of recommendation from a neurologist. I know one person whose board scores weren't that great, but is doing a neurology residency.
